Eggs in incubators or under broodies are NEVER part of the count! All of my life, I've been told not to count my chickens before they hatch - it can't be both ways!
Bantams don't count because...well, they're ornaments and not really chickens... anything I weigh in ounces is NOT a chicken...
Is it okay to not know without going to the records binder and counting up the brooders?
It will be less by Sunday - local poultry auction is tomorrow, and I promised...
Since no pics = no chicks, I took pics this afternoon:
^ These 3 are the timely ones that hatched last Saturday. They'd recently tipped their food cup into the
waterer and were havnig a lovely game, so they're messy!
^ This is miss feets, whose blisters are gone, but the blue-kote lingers...
Congrats on your found eggs! They must be strong little guys if they are hatching!
Sad for you. Glad my kids are all off at school, etc. and not here to share current hatch experience. Thank you for reminding me that being too busy to watch them can be a blessing.
Now... time to go lead...
Thank you, but I really didn't mean to by whiney - just tired. There are smiles in between - Beldar (the kitten) stood up and walked about a foot today; wobbled a lot but did not collapse . Two days ago, when I got back from the vet with the saline, I really didn't expect her to live long enough...
This has been the second most depressing hatch I have ever had... Three on day 21, funnyfeets on day 23, then three that pipped & died, followed by a normal but small chick on day 24. Candled everything left on day 24 after the last chick fluffed up, and they were still alive - two hadn't even...
Thanks for the guesses (& info); will fill in more details:
The marks, as seen about 8 hours after hatching, were only on the fleshy parts of the toes, (in between the joints) almost every section, brighter then than in the pic taken two hours(?) later and *only* the bottom surface. Almost as...
It's evolved, LOL. Obviously subQ blood; most of it is now in the center of the feet and darker- a few spots along the toes, but hard to get a good pic with a bad camera and a squirmy chick!
editing to add - this is a BO chick; feets should be pinkyish yellow
Up front - I've never hand-fed a chicken. I used to raise and hand rear parakeets, and I can tell you the feeding procedure for them after they're a week old, maybe there's something helpful in it.
1. Mix the feed with water to a medium gruel - it should not 'hold a peak' in the bowl...
Thanks for the suggestion; will use blue-kote on the feets. These are not open at all (they're subcutaneous haematomas) so I'm guessing protection from attack for a few days will give it time to right itself. The incubator is a LG on its maiden voyage, (destined to be hatcher only!) `and was...
Got a question... Woke up to another chick out; watched her for a while & she seemed fine. This afternoon she was dry, lively & fluffed out so I scanned for pips and, seeing none, took her out, checked her sex & popped her in the brooder. Five minutes later, chick is screaming - the other...
Okay... Three BO hatched on Saturday. Moved them to mini brooder this morning, checked for external pips (none) and expected two internal pips to do something - and they didn't. Still no external pips this evening, so I candled everything.
One of them is still in the bator because I've stared at...
Just a note - if you hatch a lot, Gro-Gel in the big pack (2k doses) is much less expensive. The mix rate is a half tsp to 2 oz of water. So long as you keep the powder dry & cool it keeps very well. I used to get it through Randall Burkey, but I see they don't have it now. This company has...
Heard the first peeping last night - more peeping this morning, but no external pips yet. Had two very questionable (no blood rings but no detectable movement) at lockdown, but left them in. As a side note - the 'might be clears' that I left in earlier all developed; but only two made it to...
All of my turkey eggs are confirmed out of the race - none were fertile. Penelope is now setting on a golf ball place holder until the emergency eggs I just ordered arrive. *sigh*
