If you haven't tried putting a chicken in a dark pillow case--you should :)
Not one bird moved a muscle inside there. It was weird. Like holding a bag of sand.
And my birds will break out of boxes too--but apparently not pillow cases.
I put them in upside down so they lay on their back.
It...
My birds don't like being handled either but they went limp in the dark pillow case. And they are as big as yours. I just put holes in the case near the top and put the hook through. It was really easy! I wish I did this year's ago.
That's so funny!! Sorry--I had been looking for pics of knock-kneed birds earlier--but not sure how I did that!
It's just a digital fish scale--like to weigh a fish by the lips--with a hook hanging from the bottom. I put the bird in a pillow case and hung it from the hook.
Hmmm...maybe that's why the speckled Sussex I've seen at shows look HUGE to me! Maybe they are.
20% over SOP puts my boy at 9lbs. I don't think he'll hit that but I really have no idea how quickly they can put on weight at this age.

I don't see the specific one for sale but one like these. I put my birds in a pillow case and hung them by the hook. I weighed a few things if known weight--around the same weight as the birds to check the scale.
I have a question about weight. I'm embarrassed to say that I have always thought my birds were at least a pound underweight and I have been breeding for size the last few years. It has turned out the scale I've been using is not accurate. I just bought a very accurate fish scale and discovered...
Could I please get advice on this cockerel? I like so many things about him but I'm worried about his comb. Would the bumps at the back be considered sprigs? Would you choose him as a breeder? If not, why not? He's nearly seven months and nearly seven pounds. Thanks!
