Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

Update on the bulgy hen: She has been reunited with her flock mates and so far, she is acting like her regular, old self. No one is going after her backside (thankfully), and her eggs are slowly getting larger again. The bulge has not grown or changed size, so as long as she seems healthy and...

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

Update on the Update: When I went back out to check on things this afternoon, her bulge looked like the outer layer of skin had split and was red, not bleeding, but looked like it was on the verge of doing so. I did not see any other hens going after her, so I don't know if someone pecked at it...

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

Would duramycin be a good one to try? I can separate her in the coop so that she is the only one drinking that water.

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

Update on my lumpy hen: I kept her in the mudroom the last few days to give her a chance to relax and observe her behavior. Her poop still looks normal, eyes are bright, and she is still eating well. Thursday she did not lay, Friday she laid a soft shelled egg, and yesterday another small, but...

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

Wow, I am giving you props for figuring out all of the homeopathic treatments to give your hen, and I'm glad to hear that it worked. It would be worth a try, that is for sure. Thanks!

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

Should I put her on antibiotics as suggested by quinaldy and see if that helps? I have Duramycin and Tylan 50 on hand. (Ugh, back to the needles with the Tylan, though in the breast and not the butt!)

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

What type of antibiotics did you give? What would the iodine bath do (sorry, I'm just not familiar with this as a treatment). It is pretty crazy that yours was the same age/breed. She is the only Australorp that I have right now, so I don't have anyone else to compare her to.

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

Good point about possibly jabbing into an organ that may have dropped in there, so no needles (not a fun prospect anyway). I'll let her be and see how she does. Her poop continues to look normal and she has been eating fine (got some scrambled egg last night and almost took my fingers off to get...

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

I guess we will just have to wait and see how she acts and gets on with her daily routine. I'll construct a simple sling and see if she minds wearing it, it can't hurt, right? Thanks again for your help!

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

Kathy, Thanks for the information, the photos are very helpful! It seems that with ascites the hen looks more consistently bloated, rather than one area bulging out as is the case with my hen. Do you think I should stick a needle in her to see if it drains at all (to rule out the possibility...

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

Thank you both for replying. Tatertot - Yes, it is soft and squishy, but there is a definite edge around it where the skin is firm again. The skin itself looks more transparent in the bulging area and there are no feathers (though I attributed this to the fact that the skin is stretching and not...

Hen with a bulgy, lumpy bottom - ascities, hernia, or other ailment?

I have a 10 month old hen Australorp pullet who I discovered today has developed a round, clear, squishy bulge that is protruding from her backside, an inch or two beneath her vent. She has not lost weight and is not lethargic. Her crop was full with food this afternoon. After doing an...
