I like the look of those raised beds. I'd never heard of pallet collars before. I did a quick search on craigslist and nothing showed up for me. I wonder if there is another name for them in the US?

They do ok. They are advertised as working with a 300ft line of site. Mine are setup about 75-100ft away through a window and work consistently but any farther or any extra obstructions and they start dropping the connection. I'm going to try moving the sensor to a less dense compost pile today...
I'm trying an experiment today. I took one of the sensors (http://amzn.com/B00C3HBRIW) that I have for one of those indoor/outdoor weather stations and put in inside an empty plastic peanut butter jar. I'm not really interested in trying to monitor the humidity so there are no holes in the jar...
Ah that makes sense. I didn't realize it was insulated. I wasn't looking too close at the pictures and saw the green tarp material and thought that was the sides of your bin.

Since you've created your compost pile with two sections, the size of each section seems to be about half of the recommended size... but it still works. Do you think the recommended size assumes substandard ingredients or maybe assumes it doesn't get as much attention as yours gets or ??
I've enjoyed your composting thread. It is amazing (but probably not surprising) how chickens lead to composting which leads to gardening and back to chickens again. My chicks a just starting to generate a usable amount of nitrogen and it is really accelerating the heating up of my compost piles...
