I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

He looks cool. My new rooster did that too. I keep a batch of younger pullets and cockerels than those he led in their separate coop/run a bit longer than everybody else and he would go to the coop and circles it making a worried sound. I was wondering if he wanted to eat their food but he was...

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

That's so cute. My new rooster met the chicks when they were 5 weeks old and he sometimes pecked them when the mother hen wasn't around who would peck and shoo him away. I guess he wanted to show who the boss was to the youngsters. But he kept close to the mother and the chicks and as soon as...

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

Thank you. It has worked out quite well actually. He became the leader of our 8 chicks once the mother left them. I also moved him to the chicks' coop and he seemed to grow faster probably because he could eat more without the hens bullying him. Now he's 21 weeks old and bigger than the hens who...

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

No worries. When hens lay an egg, often they make a specific sound very loudly. Good roosters hurriedly go to the hens and escort them back to a safe place. It looks like 'collecting'.

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

Wow. I'm looking forward to seeing my Mini Roo taking charge of the flock but I'm also a bit worried about it. Hopefully no blood coming... They're docile breed so it can't be that bad. For now, the second from the bottom hen bullies him here and there but the rest don't seem to mind him too...

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

Thank you. I hear his short crying less and less so it's getting better. A couple of hens are doing just what you said so it's not too bad then. He's busy keeping the distance from the hens, far from going after them. To him, the hens are just big meanies lol 😆

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

Thank you. I was a bit worried about taming the big cockerel that hadn't been socializing with people much. Hopefully this young cockerel grows up alright. The previous rooster happened to be the most scared chick among his siblings and grew up with the other dominant cockerel who was too rough...

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

I will! He went into the coop voluntarily last night after all.

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

Thank you for telling me about your chickens. He sounds like a great rooster I'm glad that your patience was rewarded. I would've kept my old rooster too if he hadn't attacked my husband and visitors so often. I would be happy as long as the new one is not human aggressive and it warns the hens...

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope my hens accept the young cockerel once he's old enough. Then how do you know whether hens accept a rooster or not? My hens used to follow the previous rooster around but they didn't squat down for him voluntarily. He had to grab them suddenly to mate...

I got a 10-week-old cockerel for my hens. Was it a mistake?

I had Light Sussex one-year-old rooster and 10 hens that were raised together as chicks by me and the rooster turned out to be human aggressive. He kicked everyone but me and even attacked mother hens for some reason. After trying hard to fix him, I eventually gave him away and got a 10-week-old...
