Got it. Makes sense. Luckily they haven’t had much other than crumbles, a boiled egg once, yogurt (which they refused) and a few ground up mealworms twice. I will get grit. Nothing harmful using adult grit at 5 weeks then? Don’t curse me with future chicks 😂
Oh ok. I get so many conflicting answers lol. I was thinking sand was like grit. I’ll get some then before anymore snacks. Thank you. They’re outside in the dirt today for the first time. I’m not sure the dirt is gritty though. But nothing other than their crumbles.
Earlier in this post I said the chicks seemed scared of me, fluttering etc…what a difference almost 2 weeks made…they now come running to me and poking the top of the brooder to get out, eat from my hand etc yay! I’m going to take them outside for the first time later today. So excited.
We feel so honored that our post made the front page. WooHoo. Sorry to those offended by the AI 😞
On another note here’s our post about their first boiled egg. They love that treat.

@Sally PB
I did the mash snack today too. After 15 minutes of my arm tiring, one actually ate and another one “thought” about it ❤️ (sorry for the music, they seem to like it)
Yes I’m sorry. I’ve posted them on other threads but not here. The first 3 pics are from today and the last one is last week when I enlarged their brooder. Can’t believe how fast they grow!!
Very true. I’m new to chickens but not most other animals and I’m still surprised at how people think giving cat food to a dog is ok or dog food to a pig etc…so yeah, same for birds.
Thank you for making this understandable! Makes sense, as I was wondering what to feed if I end up with a rooster or two (my luck they’ll all be roosters 😆) The all flock sounds more reasonable with a calcium supplement for the layers so that’s what I’ll do. The calcium is free choice at all...
I have RIR and barred rocks. I hear they’re high production so I planned on 16 weeks or so for layer feed. When and why would someone feed all flock instead? I’m sorry if these are dumb questions but I’m a chicken newbie. 😊
I love that!! Mamma jungle gym!
Yes I try to reach from the sides. I spread my arms on opposite sides and sort of corral them to one hand, lol. Slowly of course. They just seem to startle easy until I’m there more than 10 minutes. I’d love if they readily came to me. Thanks!!
Thank you! I will do this tomorrow. I’ve been trying to figure out a better way to get them used to me. I handle them daily and it’s as if the older they get, the more they flutter frantically away from me 😔
Ok, no more worms until they’re older. So the sandbox is ok for them to dust in?
