I'm giving her a ton of calcium. Too much probably! lol. I think there's something going on inside her reproductive tract. She a year old rhode island red, they should be prolific layers...I'm getting maybe 2 a week from her. and about half of those have no shell. I'll probably have my husband...
With that many hens I don't really know how to tell who's laying that egg, unless you want to sit and watch all of them all day lol. I've tried everything with this hen, and I feel awful about culling her. I'm not even sure if I can do it. I've raised meat birds and culled other hens before but...
ugh...She's layed 2 soft shelled eggs since the last post and one egg with no shell this morning. I gave her another calcium pill 2 days ago and I've been giving her some of my greek yogurt every morning. I think it may be time to cull her, something is definitely up with her system.
Well I have another update, a much better one! I'm still only getting an egg from her about twice a week but the eggs she lays have a hard shell now. Not as hard as the other hen's but its good enough. She doesn't seem to have any trouble laying an egg either. I guess I'll just have to watch her...
Since shes always had problems, should I just give her a calcium pill twice a week or so? That way she doesn't have anymore soft eggs that may break inside of her.
Well, so far so good. She's her normal self this morning, scratching around in the yard eating everything. She hasn't gone in the nest box yet to lay though. Do you think I should give her another calcium pill today just in case?
She's acting completely normal now! I'm so confused! lol...
I went to the store and bought calcium pills. Do I crush up the whole pill and give it to her? And how often should I give her a calcium pill? We'll see what she lays tomorrow, hopefully a nice hard egg.
I did some research and tums is okay for chickens. So i crushed a half of one up in some yogurt and she ate all of it. She seems to have perked up a little and is start to "talk" more when i walk out there. Shes my loudest hen. I'll see how she is tomorrow and what kind of egg she lays.
Our bathroom does not hold steam at all. Can I break up a tums and give her that??
If she does not improve I may end up putting her out of her misery. I think she is always going to have problems with egg laying.. : (
Okay, I didn't feel anything, everything is just soft...Guess I did it right. Shes walking around more now but is still acting strange. Very quiet, which is definitely not her usual self and not wanting to eat treats. I did find a weird egg in the run which I'm guessing she let out a few...
Really starting to worry about her. She was in the nest box earlier this morning and is now up, walking around really slow and tail drooping. She not acting like herself at all. Won't even eat some bird seed treats...Can anyone help me?
No they're definitely not stressed, very spoiled, lol . They also have access to the whole yard during the day so they're not cooped up until it gets dark. Shes the only one that lays eggs that are like this, she always has...
Ok, So I have an update on this hen with more questions...Sorry...
I bought nutri-drench for their water, figured it would give her extra vitamins and help her with forming eggshells. I also started grinding up eggshells and sprinkling them in their feed. Our barred rock lays the hardest...
