Fair enough. My 'established' flock (no roosters and no babies) which I kept for the longest amount of time contained only 7 chickens so I do know what you mean about getting to know all of them much better. My flock of 30 only lasted a few weeks whilst my silkie was raising her chicks before we...
Heh. I lived in suburban Sydney and managed to keep 30 chickens under the hood at one point. I just wish I could pull of the same stunt here in Canberra
At this point I'm telling them to grow faster! So I can get a closer look at those feathers dangit!
And I totally agree, a few days ago I swear they were the size of kiwi fruits. Now they're average-sized potatoes.
Congrats!!
Still going to be a while before I get any quail eggs. I also took a closer look at one of my quails last night and noticed some - uh oh - rusty looking feathers. Here's to hoping it was just a trick of the light. They're only 2 weeks old, I still have hope!
I seem to have been the opposite, over the past ~30 or so chickens I've ever bought as week-olds or younger, only 2 ever turned out to be roosters. Had a few close calls with hens looking like roosters, but they all sorted themselves out with age.
My Australorps all had black eyes. My Barter Black (Australorp x RIR) had red eyes though. Perhaps she's some kind of cross?

Ah, I used to live in suburban Sydney where one of my neighbours a few blocks down kept a whole flock with at least 2 or 3 roosters. I never figured out how they managed to get away with it, a ranger visited me about my roosters and I had to rehome them unfortunately.
Where I am at the moment...
