I also wanted to note that my lightest SOE that went through the molt also has spurs. No claws on them, just long nubs. None of the others have them.
Here are the ladies last week.
Fyi, my SOE that molted, her feathers are coming back in nicely and yesterday she laid her first egg in just over a month. The egg is much smaller than her eggs were prior to the onset of the molt, on the smaller size of medium grade. But I'm excited that she's laying again. My husband is now...
Thank you. She was my favorite.
I decided to add four different breeds, one of each, Barnevelder, Black Australorp, Cuckoo Marans, and a Speckled Sussex. These are all similar in size to my SOEs and I'll be able to tell them all apart from a greater distance. Plus a few of them are standard...
Here we are in February. One of my SOE girls is almost done with a molt.... like, almost a full blown molt; then two others had mini molts as well.... I'm getting between 1 and 3 eggs a day, usually 1 or 2. I have 4 more chicks that I got on Friday; not SOE chicks, so my adventure is about to...
So the flock is starting to get the hang of laying. I do still get an occasional soft shelled egg from them laying while they roost; but that's slowing down now. All of the eggs I get in the box are good, very hard shells. My smallest girl, Tinki, of course she's my favorite... she appears to be...
Well, I talked to the feed store where I got my chicks; they are indeed from Hoovers. So I'm either super unlucky or they're full of it with their "roughly 5% could lay brown eggs..."
I'm getting 5 eggs almost every other day. On off days a get between 1 and 3. These girls are cranking out the...
Yesterday there were 6 eggs. I'm thinking that one was on the floor of the coop yesterday. Just because I don't think it's possible that all of them are laying yet.
Two of the six eggs I recovered yesterday had thin shells and were broken before I got to them. Out of all the eggs I got, only...
Two more eggs today! The ladies are picking up the pace. They're all eating crushed egg shells, so much that I had to go buy oyster shell for them and finally pick up some 18% layer feed. They're about to run out of the raiser feed anyway and with all of them squatting and getting eggs daily, I...
Got another green egg today!
Someone laid an egg without a shell while asleep on the roost last night. I didn't get to it before they did, so I found the membrane and most of the egg innards on the coop floor.
Getting a little more consistent! Got another green egg today! Tomorrow I'll set up the chooks camera to watch the nest. 💚
Also I need to add my nesting box carpet.... Eggs are getting cracked a little from them pushing all of the pine shavings to the sides and laying directly on the plywood...
One more egg yesterday, but I wasn't home when it was laid and I forgot to set up my chicken cam. So it could be from one of the two that are laying, or, it's a new layer that laid another brown egg. 🤷♀️ They'll be 16 weeks on Tuesday.
!!! Two eggs so far today! Susu laid a double yolk egg that was quite large. Totally a "medium" size egg.
Merlin laid her first egg about an hour later! It was slightly larger than Susus first. They are 15.5 weeks old now.
Another brown egg! 😂 That's two brown of six chickens... That...
This morning Fidget was squatting as hard as she could for me while I walked into the run. I hadn't even looked down at them! She was at my feet squatting for her life. 😂
No eggs today. Could this be because it was 103 today? It was 100 yesterday and no eggs.
No more eggs yet but here's some photos of the girls at 14.5 weeks old. And Susus egg.
Chicken run shoes! Clockwise from bottom left: Susu, hiker, fidgit, peaches.
Hiker and her gold.
The girls talking loudly about the nesting box after Susu laid.
Susus first egg!
Alright! So, I figured it may be helpful to track my SOE egg laying as they come into maturity, for documentation and guidance.
My SOEs are from my local feed store. I have 6 total. Three of them look like other SOE you see commonly on the interwebs. Pretty laced/barred hackle feathers that are...
