You might get away with just raking it and hosing it down to rinse any organic matter out. I have plain old dirt heavy on the clay side and I'll rake it out maybe every other month. The size and stocking rate is more important.

The water will go straight through the sand to the lowest point. If the slab has any amount of slope to it the water will shed. Dump a bucket of water on the slab and check where the water goes.
