AFL where does she roost - near a wall or vent? Any chance there's a hole she is sticking her head through, or some stray piece of wood or plastic she's catching the feathers on? I agree with lala I would go ahead and put some Nustock on - it may address whatever the problem is even if you...

I had a chance to clean some of the DL out of pens and the layer coop last Friday, and spread it in runs. You would have thought I handed out brand new fantastic toys LOL - the chickens were so happy, digging and pecking and flinging and discovering. I wanted to add some fresh straw and it was...

One of the juvenile Silkies I posted pics of the other day is the one I trimmed, you can't really tell, I just got the feathers from around and below her eyes. Well I shouldn't say you can't tell, you can tell most of the beard and cheek fathers are missing, and you can see how uneven it looks...

I'm with Karen, I would much rather use scissors - but the ones you use make a difference. I have a pair I spent good money on when my son was an infant (22 years ago) - blunt tipped, very small, VERY sharp - still work fantastic and that's what I used to trim the crests I did last week. The...

Sexing help needed! 3 Silkies and a MaransxEE (I think): Hatched 12/6/13 Hatched 11/13/13 Hatched 11/24/13 (this is the one I trimmed feathers from around and below the eyes so it could see to eat) Hatched 10/28/13 - worst poser ever!

LM, Dragonlady uses hair tape on Silkie crests, maybe you could try that if you don't want want to actually trim the feathers until you see which alteration works best?

Delisha, so if I understand correctly, your SLW eggs were 100% fertile despite the clumsiness of the male? Or did I get it backwards? They are beautiful, BTW! I have one hen, we adore her, and call her (very originally) Dottie.

Yes, lalaland, my chickens like mice too - I'll not soon forget the day they uncovered a nest of mice in the garden and chased one another all over the place while DH looked on in a mix of horror and fascination :)

With the caveat that I have not done this myself yet, I have read of others putting all the cocks back together in one large run with a coop for roosting, who say they do okay as long as they are not able to see any of the hens/pullets. I assume there is some initial squabbling as order is...
