It's going to be fine! Mites really aren't the end of the world and most chickens are healthy and don't become "covered" by them.
Unless your chickens live in a completely contained, inside environment, they are going to be exposed to mites. Permithrin works really well and takes care of...
Update:
I bought Frontline Spray last fall and started using it on my keeper roosters. They have been mite free ALL winter! Our mite problem has been a fraction of what it normally is, and I think keeping mites off the roosters has been the difference. I still use permithrin dust on my...
Actually, I rotate all the time..... I'll use Permethrin dust for a treatment and then Sevin the next time. I'll switch them in the dust bathing areas & also switch what I use in the coop. I've only used the Poultry Protector for a few months - and that was because I thought the mites were...
Tomorrow is "check up" day for my flock. I'll be checking them all over - not just the vent area - after that disaster with my rooster. It may well be worth it to treat my roosters with something I wouldn't be comfortable using on my hens or cockerels that will be eaten at some point. I do...
I use pine shavings from TSC or the feed store. (Shrink wrapped packages.) It's a wooden floor and a well built wooden coop that's only about 5 years old.
It's my roosters that seem to have the consistent mite problems - and I've wondered if it's something with them. I was thinking about trying the Eprinex or Frontline just on them to see how it goes. My permanent roosters are usually pets and aren't eaten, so it might be worth a try. Also...
I'm going to pass on the Eprinex. I was looking at the package and noticed it's not safe for use on veal calves (something about pre-ruminating animals). Now, I get the milk/meat thing, but cows are a lot different than chickens, starting with a very thick hide that isn't eaten. We sell our...
Thanks for that great insight into the "farmer mentality".
The bath came BEFORE my big step, though. The Dawn was what I've read will remove all the mites and the eggs. I was just doing what I thought would get rid of EVERY mite. You confirmed that it's counterproductive and even harmful...
Thank you for the info, johnderosa1. We do have 2 coops and could easily lock down and fumigate one while the chickens stayed in the other.
The "gross" factor just increased ten fold! It makes me want to use the Eprinex on myself, too. Although, I know it's true...and all you need is 1...
Today I'm giving up my dream of ever having a mite-free flock of chickens.
We've dabbled in this mite battle with Northern Fowl Mite for about two years, but fully engaged the battle about a year ago. I've gone through more cans of Sevin and Poultry dust than I care to calculate. I've put...
