I don't think so, the swelling appeared after the cuts to the hock, plus it's still using both legs. The one with the possible gangrene however may have originally had a slipped tendon as it just suddenly stopped using one leg although the leg wasn't dead when it 1st happened.
Yeah I'm really hoping they were just isolated cases rather than a contagious disease, it's looking good so far but i will "quarantine" them any way for a few more weeks before introducing them to the rest of the flock.
It's been a while since I've seen any changes in the 2 affected ones, the...
Oh ok i guess it's possible then.
The thing is i most likely won't keep him/her and i can't think anyone that would take it off my hands, i would feel guilty about culling it though as it seems to be getting along alright at the moment, eating drinking etc.
You can get aspirin over the counter here so that shouldn't be a problem, I'll try giving small amounts to the 2 affected chicks.
To be honest I'm not sure whether it is a disease or injury, the chick with the dead leg most likely lost function of it's leg due to an injury as it was quite...
Just to clear things up, the chicks leg is naturally black and the same colour as it's good leg, the other chick with yellow legs and brown marks on the leg had propolis applied to the wounds hence the colour change.
Thanks for the info, i didn't know about oregano having antibacterial properties, i will also try some garlic.
I hatched them all in an incubator, 2 incubators actually and some of the eggs were over 3 weeks old which probably explains a couple of the deaths as a couple chicks were born pretty...
Getting your hand on antibiotics here is no easy task, you can't buy it over the counter for people or for animals so the only way to get it is to find a vet that specialises (or at least knows the basics) in poultry, take the chick for examination then they may or may not prescribe it depending...
I'm based in England so unfortunately wouldn't be able to use those services, I'll have to look and see if i can find anyone here.
Update on the chicks: Fortunately I've had no issue with any others since creating this thread, one chicks leg has completely died i think as it's toes are now...
3 of the chicks i have i bought the eggs from eBay so being egg transmitted is a possibility. I think i read somewhere that it takes a while for symptoms to show but in some cases it can come up as soon as a week old? 2 chicks from a relatives hen (don't think that has MS) and 1 from the ebay...
Out of the 5 that have died, 1 died shortly after birth in the incubator (no swelling joints or wounds, 1 was born with curled toes and died a day or 2 after hatching (no swelling or wounds), 1 had splayed legs and died in the process of me trying to sort it (my fault but no swelling or wounds)...
Unfortunately i don't have any vets nearby that could help.
One thing to note is that the swelling would only occur where there is was an open wound so i thought maybe it's some type of bacteria entering through the wound whereas with mycoplasma synoviae it sounds like it has nothing to do...
Some of the symptoms do match rickets but i don't think that's it, I've been feeding them a complete chick food and also added multi vits to their water the other day so they had extra vitamins for 3 days or so.
Interesting you mention spider bite, there was a small one (i think false black widow) in the brooder box but i took it out before putting the chicks in. The good news is 6 of them appear to be OK and showing no signs of problems.
The one in the 1st pics doesn't appear to be getting any worse...
A few days ago
Now
(ignore the brown stuff, that's propolis) wounds have improved but leg has swollen instead.
Also forgot to mention the chicks are less than a week old
This has to be my worst experience raising chicks, I've had 5 die so far despite never loosing any before. A few that died i understood why but one of the most recent died due to injuries to it's knees, it was cut and swollen and the chick couldn't stand.
I've got one with a knee that's swollen...
