Pine and Cedar shavings are dangerous

I actually do agree with you Beekissed. We take risks with everything we do, and we have to decide if what we are doing is worth the risk. Grapes are easy to cut up, so I did until they were a bit older. Eating all whole organic food is what I should be feeding my children, but I can't...

Pine and Cedar shavings are dangerous

I agree that experience is the best way to learn. I do not agree that if you do something wrong, you will always quickly find out it is wrong. I can give you so many examples, but here are a couple. Is it safe to give your young toddler whole grapes? Why not? They will probably end up...

Pine and Cedar shavings are dangerous

LOL I guess what most people should get out of this, is go ahead and use pine shavings. If you see your chicks having issues (which probably won't happen) take them iff the pine and see if it helps. You are right about the rest, too. I am about to jump in and get my feet wet pretty soon. I...

Nope, no chickens, and yes I read it from books. That is why I mentioned that I read it in books. ;) I am just saying there could be an issue with chicks according to some people, and it isn't worth the risk for me. I don't go for the "I have always done it that way so it must be ok"...

Pine and Cedar shavings are dangerous

From the book City Chicks "In a confined space like a brooder, using pine or cedar bedding will give your young babies phenol exposure that can result in respiratory problems later." They go on to say that pine is probably fine for adults, and they use some in their coops, but think there have...

Pine and Cedar shavings are dangerous

I have also read about the pine being harmful, especially with chicks. I am going to avoid them at least until my birds are big enough to be roosting in the coop.
