I'm gonna try to move these chicks outside tomorrow. They outgrew the brooder and made a mess in there. Getting their feathers and looking really pretty though. For some reason, the wyandottes seem to be maturing slower than the other breeds. They have always been smaller and had less feathers.
The button quail have been laying a bunch of eggs lately, so I just fed a handful to the chickens. They love it and it gives them a lot of good nutrients.
Looks like my youngest blue Ameraucana has gone broody. Kinda surprising since she's not even a year old yet, but she was raised by Yokie Jr so it makes sense I guess. I will not be letting her sit, mainly because she attacked me when I took the eggs. There was also a bunch of ants in her nest...
I just put some eggs in from the marans, there's also 3 serama eggs that the hens were sitting on that I took away since they can't be trusted anymore.
Although I love letting the hens raise their chicks, after this incident I'm not so sure. I will no longer let any hens raise chicks unless it's an experienced hen I can trust, such as Yokie Jr.
You know, when the serama hens started hatching their chicks, it started off as an amazing fun adventure. But it quickly turned into a life threatening emergency. In case you haven't heard, I moved the third chick in with Maddy this morning. It crawled under her, everything seemed fine, then I...
The third chick just hatched and it is a white one! This is really cool because I don't have any white adult seramas, so I wonder where it came from. It's kinda perfect though because now there's a pure brown chick, a pure white chick, and a chick that's half brown half white.
Ok so as you all know, broody hen had one baby chick yesterday and one about to hatch. There's 2 more broody hens in the nest box and the mom is in a seperate enclosed spot inside the coop, and I move the chicks over with her as they hatch. This morning before schoo I went out and checked on...
Hatchery chicks are now almost a month old and outgrowing the brooder so I need to get them outside soon. I'm thinking I'll move the peafowl in with the main flock then the chicks will get the pen the peafowl are currently in. I can't move anything though until I treat all the flocks for coryza.
I almost cracked them open...not sure what was going through my head but I feel kinda bad about it now. Glad I didn't. Yes I will try to set up the incubator. I guess im just a bit tired and stressed today
That's unfortunate. She should have 3 more eggs hatching these next few days. I have a bit of a problem. The hens are always laying new eggs in her nest, and today there were 2 new ones that had just started developing. I had taken them out earlier so I thought they had died but they were still...
