I think wool is superior to any other material in this situation. My first one I used a $20 wool blanket I found at our local military supply store. The other two I built, I used a new military wool blanket I found on Amazon for $22. I also read a post, where someone made one using a wool coat...
The first picture shows a significantly increased the door size, as well as a second door was added door. I do not know the exact measurements off hand, but to put it in prospective, the front wall (with the entrances) is a 1X12X3/4 inch board, approximately 48" long. In this picture if you...
Once I created a kind of an alcove entrance, that seemed to correct the problem with getting them to use it. However I do like your suggestion on the curtain style design. I'm getting ready to use it in the next few weeks. I just put 40 eggs in the incubator yesterday.
During the 6 weeks for my chicks the lows ranged from mid 30's to mid 40's (Fahrenheit). I had no issues with these temps. I'm sure it would work at lower temps, but how low, who knows>
A quick update: I have not had time to post anything lately. So the wool hen worked great. I raised 14 chicks all the way through 6 weeks old with now heat source since day 3, other than the wool hen. Two things additional things I would change that i have not mentioned in the previous post are...
I was hoping they would start going in, if I kept placing them in it, but I don't think that's what happened. Mainly because they all still fought me on it every night, and a few of the roo's would come right back out, and I had to stick them deep in it, to get them to stay. But it is a possibility
This may be a bit lengthy. But my Wool Hen works-Here's how
First, Thank you to everyone for your input on this project. You will notice, I incorporated everyone's ideas into the final project.
My wool hen is now working in the manner I hoped for.
My goal was to get away from using any...
Inside there is a 1" strip of wool every 1 1/2 square inches. Which is about 380 strips of wool in the box. Which hang down 1/2 inch from the floor. It actually is more effective than I thought it would be, and you are right, it looks like a chicken carwash inside I just need to figure out how...
That is a good point. I will add a few vent holes to it. I am also thinking of making the entrance larger now. I planned to make it larger as they got bigger, but maybe the bigger opening now, may make it less intimidating for them. I appreciate your input.
I just completed a wool hen build a few days ago. I currently have 14 chicks using this as their only heat source. With temperatures in the mid 40's at night, they are able to stay warm in the wool hen. However I have one problem. They won't go in it on their own. I have to go out every evening...
