I'd hate to see my SBELs go broody. They would draw blood. California Greys are a good idea! I am just not sure where I would find one in Canada without getting just a BR/Leghorn cross. I do like the sexlink feature. Did it with BRs and found the same thing, the girls looked like Ameraucanas...

The egg colour of the SBELs I bred in 2014 has been fine. The egg production is excellent compared to the Ameraucanas! However, the temperament is really disappointing. First, the commercial Leghorn mom I used had great egg laying capabilities, but she was really flighty. I can take flighty...

I know they aren't EEs :) Thanks for bringing up that point though--it's a real issue in the "chicken world" these days.

They are purebred Amers. Not EEs. I have EEs, but specifically bought these Ams from exhibition lines. I'm not sure that the SBEL chicks are yellow skinned? Maybe white/pinkish? Edit: And my Ams do have white skin, I believe.

I'm hoping so! I have had leg colour changes in the past so maybe they will turn out completely slate if they are female. Their legs look yellow but there is gray creeping in which gives them a bit of a greenish look. At the moment the combs are a mite worrying. I'm attributing it to their...

Hmm...two of them seem to have quite yellow/pink legs, while the other two have legs with a greyish tinge that has increased in the last week. Is there any hope?

Was this with the Ameraucana male or female? I have 4 from an Ameraucana rooster x Leghorn hen. They are almost 2 weeks old and all have pinkish legs...sold the other 3. Maybe they were pullets.

Never had a breed hatch so quickly. All 7 eggs that I placed in the incubator three weeks ago hatched rapidly within 12 hours of each other. All are big, fluffy, healthy chicks with beards. Look almost like Faverolles from the top because they have very little black down. Very satisfied with them.

Interesting idea. I'm used to my bantams doing this. Never had LF chicks do it... looks like it will be 7/7 SBELs!

Thanks! I've never had one before. Are they very blue eggs? I have a bantam EE that I think has a blue egg gene and a white egg gene...her egg is very pale and now the pale green tint is very hard to see at this point in her laying cycle. It has to be in the right light. Otherwise it looks...

I have my first SBELs hatching now! 1 chick hatched and 6 more hopefully on the way (at least 3 are pipped)! They are from a WLH hen and Black Amer rooster. It's a very cute chick -- I might be able to see a little black mark but mostly yellow. Appears to be bearded!
