So we hatched some 300 this year. I hope to soon post pics for fellow Ancona people to enjoy. I hope that others are developing an interest in working on preserving this excellent breed. I am struck by the productivity, elegance, and hardiness of our strain. They are a joy to watch move about.

@Rhinoman Sounds great. Do you have an SOP? If you start going over it, it might be fun for you to clerk at the show at the Northeastern Poultry Congress.

@Rhinoman you're going to do excellently--excellently, and the Anconas are making strides this season. At 5 months this pullet is laying well. Take out your SOP and give it a read while considering her. She's far from perfect, but she certainly passes as a standard-bred Ancona. PS: I hope...

Wingbands are certainly the way to go. Legbands are nice as a convenience, but they're not dependable. It is amazing how they can slip out of them. As you grow in poultry, these notions will change. Wingbands are the most professional manner of tracking your stock. The area where the...

You have a very rare bantam there. That's excellent. I'm jealous. Do what is necessary to protect the male's comb. Nice, neat, controlled housing. Certainly no free-ranging at least until you've developed a stronger flock. You're going to want several different spaces--eventually, i.e...

Some update photos of what's growing out this year. Our strain is really coming along well. They possess excellent disease resistance, strong vigor, fairly early maturity, and productivity. They are selected to the SOP each year. The Mediterranean breeds, as well as the Continental...

Well, there's a big--BIG--difference between failing and giving up. A huge difference. I think that, in poultry if not in other areas as well, failure is one of the best modes of learning. I think that's how I've learned so much--I just keep failing. Isn't that Churchill, though, "Never...

Sounds like some form of mite. I'd use DE or Pimetherin. You can put it the corners of your nest boxes, too.

Their standard potential is extremely similar. They have identical weights and almost identical type. However, although there are typical traits that ideally lead to utility, the actualization of utility depends on the individual breeder. Think of it like "breed is an idea; strain is a...

Although no one will accuse these of being good photos per se; they do suffice to get of sense of what's coming up from the 2015 hatches. It's still far too early, of course, for fine details--or even not so fine details, but they're shown some preliminary signs of being up on their legs and...

The strain does have good size: length and width. They're big birds. Now it's about refinement. Are you finding them to be productive?
  14. Yellow House Farm

Yes, the wings are too low, which is something I struggle with in general, but there's a lot of positive going on with that bird.

Don't worry about the coloring when they're you. They're are three sets of feathers before maturity. The proper mottling comes in when they're adults. As teenagers they have the big splotches of white.

Greetings! This pullet took Reserve Champion Mediterranean at the Northeastern Poultry Congress. She has exceptional type and condition. We are very excited about her.

Yes, they'll add more white with age; it's part of the mottled gene. Be wary of too much white in young birds; it duplicates quickly. Remember, too, there's no need to use a bird in breeding just because it happens to be there. If you don't specifically need it; then it's not needed, right...
