Wish I was closer a friend and I are working with some marans and these boys could really help that project! But I am on the western slope.... sigh good looking boys
So breeds like the sexlinks are laying machines their first year... lots of folks start with chicks late feb or early march so that they hit maturity before the daylight hours start to get short. looks like yours hatched first of may??? some of them may start to lay in Nov or Dec. if you are...
how old are your chicks??? most of the breeds you have listed should start laying at 5 to 9 months old.... I could be wrong but I would think you should see eggs this fall????
I guess my point was if you were close enough I would love to trade but I can not ship. Maybe someone closer to you will be interested. I would be but it's quite a drive from montrose.
We had a small 3 hour power outage here night before last... I was able to keep my incubators covered and warm, but the neighbor up the valley had chicks trying to hatch.... only one made it.
Sounds like you did well.... I put these in lockdown Wednesday. So far I have 5 out 1 duck, one necked neck one black chick, and 2 turkeys.... i try to run my humidity a little lower usually shoot for 30 to 35% and then bump over 60 for lockdown. The bowls you see in the pic are to help increase...
Watch your air cells... if your eggs came from the same elevation you are incubating at then your chances are better....I have read of many folks at lower elevations hatching dry here on the western slope that doesn't work well.... candle and trace your air cells and then adjust humidity...
most hatcheries only have Easter Eggers ..... but claim otherwise. I have raised many of the Ameraucaunas from them and been very happy with the eggs and personalities.
I put my special orders through my local feed store and they use privet, it its in new Mexico. I was happy with the Delaware I recieved from them several years ago... they don't have a fancy web page but seem to be responsive and the chicks arrived in good shape.
Only 8 mm? Maybe I have a rooster problem I know there are more than that here, OK so half or so are still in the grow out stage but still I love a good rooster. or 7 but who is counting? Some women collect shoes, I collect poultry
I have a few german bielefelders here in montrose and a few mix turkeys.... I am not sure exactly where on the western slope you are but there is a lovely gal in delta that advertises on Craigslist and seems to have some different things.... I enjoyed the visit. And got silver welsh harliquin...
depending on where you are some people get a shed and convert to a coop... that was my first coop that I used for 6+ years. or some of the "shed" places sell specific coops.... they will be much better put together than the prefab ones at either murdochs or tractor supply.
