Shed into Coop - Need Ideas & Suggestions

Thanks guys, I've had the fake eggs in (some of) them since before she was laying, so we'll see what happens today. I've got a board to put on top too, just haven't done it yet. Great idea about the perch in front of the upper boxes, I will add that to the list of improvements to be made!

So my one hen that is laying wanted nothing to do with the boxes configured like that. She was wedging herself into a space about 4 inches wide to lay an egg this morning, and as funny as it was, I'd really rather she uses the boxes. I added dividers to each space and lowered it so the chickens...

I finally added my nest boxes to the coop, I converted and old wooden bed frame into 6 jumbo sized boxes. My oldest pullet has started to sing her egg song and would rather scratch around the coop than free range with the flock. If the chickens really don't like them, I can add dividers to make...

Yup, that's what I meant by "backed up with duct tape" :)

I used the same 2"x2" fencing as is on top of mine (still have lots of that stuff from previous owner), secured it with my staple gun (that has been my best friend in making this coop lol), backed up by duct tape. The cardboard is really thick, so they don't poke through.

That's great! Thank you for the suggestion, I promptly went and added a "window" to the box. (although I feel like I should have thought of that! LOL)

I would recommend doing a read through of the DLM thread, but chances are YES. It would also depend on the climate, its its naturally wetter it could rot faster. I decided against using it on my wood flooring, even though i gave a generous coating of bj57 (see above). People in that thread...

Thanks everyone. Today after work I coerced my oldest boy into helping me move the metal gazebo frame (fenced in 10x10' run) down the hill, over to the shed. What an adventure lol. Tomorrow I'll put the shade back on it and secure it so it can be used. There will be an additional 24x36' fenced...

The Shed-Coop has passed its first test of the elements, we had a freak thunderstorm that dumped 2 inches of rain on us this weekend (crazy for southern california in the summer), making everything a muddy, sloppy mess. But the interior of the shed is dry, even with the gable vents and windows...

Just checking in with some small things and thoughts. I did lower one of the roosts (8') down to about 26" high. if it never gets used at that height, at least the holes are already drilled to move it back up lol. I have also thought about putting in a solar led light, not anything bright (I...

My plan is to let the floor finish curing this week so there is no question about odors etc, and time permitting this week I will move my existing run to its location on the side of the shed. (Along with my existing, sadly undersized coop lol). Either this weekend or next, my chicks will be...

Thoughts RE: Blackjack 57 1. I am pleased with the results, it now seems to have bonded well with the wood. 2. Applying this stuff is absolutely a multi day project. I read that it's dry time is 4 hours, so I went black in to touch up some spots and my shoes were pulling up chunks, ripping it...

Rollers, lol. After I figured out the spread/smear vs roll, I drove a couple screws into the end of the roller so it wouldn't roll. The floor was with a standard large "roller", and the walls with a 3 1/2" one. After it dries enough to go inside, I'll try the paint brush for the creases the...

Shed into Coop - Need Ideas & Suggestions

So blackjack 57 is a pain in the ***** to apply! I learned quickly that it MUST be spread, rolling just picks it right back up. Once I figured that out, it went pretty fast, although there's a few spots that I tried to re-spread after a minute, and it tore it up. I need to touch up around the...

Good luck on your shed conversion! its got a lot of potential, its gonna turn out great! I agree with leaving the dirt floor, but if you are going to bury hardware cloth, there are lots of people warning about future rust and chickens digging it up. I am picking up a bucket of the blackjack...

Great template to work from! I've been really fortunate for all the ideas in this thread; for example i would not have thought to block access to the rafters, probably until i walked under a chicken at the wrong time lol.

thanks for the encouragement, and the idea for a lower roost. I feel better about blocking off the rafters, i would hate for one of my birds to "fly" off them and break a leg. My flock consists of a few easter eggers, 2 delawares, 2 RIR/PRs, a barred rock, and a bunch of australorps. would...
