May be I didn't leave it for fermentation long enough then. I mixed 1 1/2 gallon water + 1 1/2 gallon dry feed, together with left over fermented feed from previous batch, and left them in 5 gallon Home Depot bucket with cover, for 3 days. It smelled a pleasant alcohol at 3 days so I assumed...
So I've been feeding fermented feed to my quails for the last couple weeks now. To be honest I have not noticed less feeds and less poops. I haven't done a scientific comparison. It may have made a difference but definitely not 1/3 of the feed or poop as I read. And I have to fill the feed...
This is it. Pretty simple. I got some 2 x 2 1/2 hardware cloth laying around. The plastic bins are from dollar store, 50c each. Oyster shell and fermented feed. Works out pretty well.
I'm not planning to leave the fermented feed for more than a day, but can't feed them twice a day either. Will have to figure out how much is right. Probably will still leave the dry food in there so they won't go hungry.
I just bought some plastic containers. I"m constructing a simple...
Thanks Sill & Invision for your help. My feed is fermented now. I can smell the alcohol. Not too strong but it's there. I fed to two of the cages first. I screwed a plastic bowl (cheap) on a 3/4 inch board so it won't flip. Saw some birds jumped and walked on it but not too bad, didn't...
OK I mixed 50/50 feed and water volume-wise a week ago. Haven't noticed fermentation yet (does not smell like alcohol and does not bubble). The mixture looks a little dry so I'm not sure if bubble would be formed. I left it outside so it may be too cold to ferment, around 40-50 F at night...
You made me feel bad about the way I treat my quails, Sill :-) Your offering looks ... delicious! All I do for my quail is building a feeder that will supply enough feed for one week. Low maintenance. But I'm going to try fermenting feed. Just started a batch this morning. Should be ready...
