Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

Good news, my girl who has been struggling laid a perfectly normal, beautiful egg today! I saw her in the nesting box this morning, and found a somewhat tiny but very normal egg this afternoon: I think maybe this is a "my molt is over and I'm ready to start laying again" egg. Wouldn't you know...

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

Another rubber egg from the barred rock this morning. I've switched from sand to shavings on the coop floor for the winter, so I didn't notice it at first. Looks like the last one was about a week ago. Will continue to monitor her I guess, she gave me no signs that she was uncomfortable...

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

Hmmm...another rubber egg from the barred rock under the roost this morning. Earlier in the week, she laid a normal egg (the first egg at all in a while, which I was attributing to the molt). Maybe her system is just getting back up and running. Who knows. She didn't look uncomfortable last...

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

Aart, yes, I have a whole lot of stuff going on with my girls right now! I'm hoping the molt is the reason for the egg problems with the Barred Rock! She was sneaky, she never had bare patches, but I kept finding tons of her feathers everywhere, and finally noticed her tail was looking a...

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

No more strange eggs for over a week now, but I have noticed the Barred Rock is definitely molting now. She's mostly lost feathers around her tail, and has a lot of little pin feathers popping up. So, maybe she was just having trouble because of molting.

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

No, I'm pretty happy with what I use right now. The widespread problems seem to have let up (I'm going to go with the explanation that they had experienced a stressful attempted hawk attack not long before). On the Barred Rock, I think it is an individual problem that I'll have to continue to...

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

Thanks, Julie. I will give it a try- do you separate her from the others when giving her the Tums? I am so thankful that I have a good avian vet around, so if this continues into next week, we'll schedule an appt.

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

Had another shell-less egg yesterday. I opened the coop first thing in the morning, and the BR was hesitant to come off the roost. I lifted her out and she was looking uncomfortable again- hunched up and relatively still, not eating breakfast at all (which is very unusual for her- she's always...

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

So the barred rock had another egg from the roost today. I let them out to free range around 5pm, and she was looking uncomfortable. She was a bit hunched up and didn't stray very far with the others. I looked her over, and couldn't see anything in th vent (though she looked like she was...

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

8 girls in a large coop, I forget the measurements offhand but the roosting bar could accomodate at least 4-5 more chickens if they were lined up wing-to-wing (which obviously would NOT be adequate room). They have a large screened run, which is approximately 15 x 20. They do- generally they...

Any other opinions about supplementing with additional calcium or just waiting it out?

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

Thanks for the suggestions aart! In terms of stress issues: 1. There was an attempted hawk attack about two weeks ago- but everyone was uninjured, just a little freaked out for a couple of days 2. I would say a few are doing a very light molt- but no one walking around naked 3. I did wonder if...

Shell/calcium issues- and now, shell-less eggs

In the past week, I have had 3 eggs break in the nest. Based on shell color, they were from at least 2, if not 3, different chickens. Separately, I have a 2.5 year old barred rock who has laid 4 soft shell eggs from the roost at night over the past month. She typically lays 2-3 times a week, so...
