    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

They don't get adult lacing until after the juvenile molt, so it's a good idea to judge color and lacing after they start laying.

Just to throw my 2 cents in on laying age: I don't look for pullet bullets until just before the six month old mark, and I am the weirdo who is crossing breeder stock with hatchery stock. The hatchery hens I have (from Ideal and Cackle) didn't start laying until almost six months old, so 23-26...

SC=Single Comb I tend to like abbreviations, especially in the morning.

The single comb is a recessive gene, which is why it pops up in breeder stock as well as hatchery stock. Your SC chick is a cockerel, but the SC is independent of gender - I've had some SC pullets, though most have tended to be cockerels in my F1 generation. The single comb is a disqualifying...

If she is as young as she looks, then her comb will get a little larger as she gets older. May take until her first full molt.

It's called a rose comb, and that is what Wyandottes ought to have.

She looks like a GLW to me: gold-laced pattern on her feathers, yellow legs/feet, rose comb, and a round shaped body.

They usually don't start kazooing until puberty hits, but I've had some less than a week old chest-bumping each other in the brooder tub. The batch I have with hens and a capon don't do that, because momma/cnanny won't allow such rowdiness. Cockerels also tend to stand up straight and look...

    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

I sincerely wish you the best of luck in your search! I went looking over a year ago, and when I didn't find what I wanted, I started a project to make it, using hatchery and breeder stock. I am now hatching my first generation in this project. Several pages back is a discussion of my little...

She has a single comb - Wyandottes ought to have a rose comb (like your SLW in the first picture). If you are wanting to breed just for fun or eggs, it's no big deal. The SC gene is recessive to the rose comb gene, which is why it still pops up over a century after the standard was set to RC...

    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

A capon will not be siring chicks - he's a castrated male chicken. If you want to work with full-blooded GLWs, then what you'll want to look for in a cockerel or rooster is: How well does his dam lay? You will certainly want the son of a good layer to cross with a good layer for egg...

This is my thought as well. I have a group of GLWs, hatched 13 April, who will hide their eggs any and every chance they get. Also in with them is an Ameracauna mix, who lays pretty mint-green eggs, so the Easter egg hunt theme is complete with this bunch.

A while back ago, I discussed my "mad scientist" project here, about using color-cull black phase BLRs over hatchery GLWs, and at the end was asked to post progress pics. Here is Bigfoot, my best cockerel from my first hatch, October 19th. He is 13-1/2 weeks old in this pic. (I marked his...

I have a couple early birds in my incubator, one Meatie and one Wyandotte (my first!). The eggs were due to hatch tomorrow evening. Hubby and I got to watch the little Wyandotte kick out of its shell. I feel like an excited little kid. (The nest under the neighbor's broody hen was robbed...

I have a batch of mid-April pullets that I expect to start laying sometime between mid-September to mid-October.
