I've never ordered a hatchery choice/surprise, but this year I decided what the heck, I'd like to be surprised! I ordered from Meyer, the rainbow pullet selection so pretty much anything is fair game . They're coming mid-March. Now, where am I going to grow out 25 chicks?
I placed my order for bantams for my breeding projects. Went with MMM. Ordered some red frizzle Cochin, barred Cochin and partridge Cochin. The plan is to hold a red frizzle rooster and put him over some barred hens to make little bantam frizzled sex links. then maybe a pen of the barred, and...
Folly--I hadn't thought of the "rarer" breeds being closer to SOP, or larger in size, but that's a good observation. Plus, a blue laced Wyandotte rooster is about the definition of eye candy! And the blue coloring makes fun offspring when you're playing mix and match with your next generations.
I've never had a Wyandotte rooster, but that might be my choice in your situation. My hatchery Wyandotte hens and their offspring were always heftier than their dp counterparts--Rocks, reds, Wellies, etc. They're nice eye candy

Only one hen went broody. It was while I was gone and she hatched out a dozen chicks. Barn cat got 3 before I...
Well, if I go quality birds it's going to be barred Rocks for me. I like these Marans ladies I have but the breed just doesn't do it for me overall. I've seen the birds the really good Rock breeders have and they're simply . I'd beg eggs from someone like that. Wonder if they'd like my firstborn ?
I'm a MMM fan also. Most of my birds come from them, or Ideal.
And yes, I was just on their site, cruising chick assortments. I'm thinking to order the Rainbow layers or whatever they call it now. Pick the ones I want to keep and sell the rest.
Then I go outside and deal with all the mud...
