    My Cornish X experiment

Oh I agree! The CX's are fast and work well for factory farms, but are not the best eating when raised that way. The perfect bird is still out there and the Jersey Giant could be what is missed. Do you go to Jessica's thread...

    My Cornish X experiment

I do not have any Jersey Giants, never had any. I know there are a couple people on Jessica's thread that have them and are hoping to breed that way. I would like to get some, but space is limited. As much as I would like to raise all my meat chicks, with the costs of CX's so low, I am not...

Yeah there is. Bert died, but I have several babies of his from before he died. I crossed him with rainbows. The babies are huge and doing well. They seem to be healthy and everything. I am hoping to breed the babies to each other next spring. They look like the perfect meat chicken to me.

    My Cornish X experiment

You're very welcome, Gosh, we are all so polite,. You are actually purposing what I am trying to do. I really want to know how it works out for you. I am so afraid I am going to go out and into the coop and find my only CX rooster dead every day. I know it is not a rational fear, or maybe it...

    My Cornish X experiment

I wish you well, I would keep 3 hens and 2 roosters if I was you. I did not keep enough roosters I only kept the one and I am scared to death something will happen to him and ruin my whole experiment for this year. Remember do not over feed the CX's to make them into good birds!

    My Cornish X experiment

Just a note to update. I still have 4 CX's alive. They are all in the 15 pound range. I let them free range, feeding them only scratch and a little 16% protein layer mash now and then. They still live in the same brooder as pictured, except it is covered by snow, so I call it an igloo...

I had 3 turkeys when I started and they were happy together..... They grew into 14 turkeys, 15 guinea hens and 150 chickens in a few months....So watch them reproduce! Turkeys are very noisy. In case your neighbors would be upset. They are friendly and will come running when they see you...

Doubleindness I have heritage breed turkeys, they are much slower growing than a broad breasted turkey. They also have a higher proportion of dark to light meat. Those of mine slated to be guests of honor for thanksgiving were hatched in early May. I am hoping they will be big enough.

    My Cornish X experiment

DoubleKindness, Crowing is peaceful and enjoyable to me. I have 15 Guineas they are noisy making racket all day long! They are the noisiest animal I have ever owned. They NEVER shut up. When they get excited it gets louder. Each bird seems to be trying to out shout the other one. If...

    My Cornish X experiment

I started with 25 CX's in the tractor/brooder attached to the tractor/pen. I will have 4 in it over winter is all. It is actually 2 4x4 boxes set end to end. I am hoping they all stay in just one box. I plan to cover the box with straw bales and leave a "window" open on the other box for...

I have a small coop and a larger second coop. Right now I have birds in both coops. The small coop has 15 guineas ( if I can get the little Ba#%*rds to go into it. The other night 3 refused to go in. I seriously considered grabbing the 12 ga and cleaning 3 guinea fowl...... And I have 21...

    My Cornish X experiment

Hey Jacob! Where did you go? I hope you did not think I was serious on the rooster thing....I am just overly zealous i9n protecting the reputation of Brutus..... My meatballs are almost ready. I have one that should go over 10lbs dressed! Most of mine will be in the 6-7 lbs range I...

    My Cornish X experiment

The terms Best rooster ever are forbidden on this thread unless they are describing Brutus! I have a couple of chickens that harass my CX's also, The CX's outweigh the hens now, but they are so gentle they hardly ever fight for pecking order. I did have two CX's bump chest the other day, was...

    My Cornish X experiment

Thanks, It really is a double edge sword day. I love providing home raised meat for my family, but I hate losing my pets. I spent so much time with them. visiting, feeding, cleaning and so forth, no matter how much I say I will not become attached to them, I do.

    My Cornish X experiment

I found another good rooster in my flock tonight.. A red sex link rooster came running to the aid of a little or not so little CX I picked up and carried to the brooder. Unfortunately, I informed said rooster it was too late for him to act responsibly as he was schedule to get on the bus to...

Linda and Bladeguy Hit my philosophy on the nose, kinda. I am not a anti medication under all circumstances. I just ( knocking on wood now) have not had a need for it. If I had a disease start in here, I would use the drugs needed. I raise my chickens a little different from most people...
