Ah I see the type. You woke up thinking “where can I find some joy in my life today?” and then you came to the only place where you hold any type of authority: the chicken forum. While perusing different posts, you saw the one about a sick hen with a newbie owner. You went through the replies...
All of this. I have been working every day (weekends included) to be able to afford the vet and I try to come back home as often as I can during the day to tube-feed Fiona.
I also have other animals to care for, including one whom I provide hospice care for and will likely be dead by the end...
My vet thinks Fiona may have had a stroke, so it could be something other than the feed. But again, I’m going to get a new bag of Layena. I’ve been working without any day off for the last two weeks so I can pay my vet bills. I’m such an a**hole I guess for waiting for my one day off (today) to...
It hasn’t been two weeks. We found the mold this week and immediately stopped. My healthy chicken isn’t going to die or get sick from eating the old food for a couple of days until I go to Tractor Supply again.
They DO have Layena, but the bag had MOLD in it. I will not give my girls the food that had MOLD so I switched to the old feed until I can get a new bag.
This is frustrating. Please read before commenting.
And no she had no head trauma that I know of. She lives in a very gentle environment with...
And I’m not sure you understand that MOLDY FOOD would be worse for them in the short term.
Fiona is being fed formula anyway so neither the old nor the new feed have been inside her since she got sick a month ago.
The old feed may have made her sick, but the feed that is out today has nothing...
We bought Layena, but just a couple of days ago a big moldy chunk came out of the bag. So we’ve put down the old food until I can get my hands on a new bag.
Fiona is tube-fed baby formula though, so for now she’s not getting the old one or the new one.
Update. Fiona has not shown any progress since I last posted. We feel more comfortable leaving her outside (we still check on her) but we always find her standing by a wall when we go check. Even if we put her in the middle of the backyard, she walks to the wall.
The only thing that changed is...
Fiona saw the vet today and he was pleased with her progress. He said it’s possible that her condition is due to vitamin deficiency. He also suspects a stroke, but it sounded like more of a minor possibility according to him.
We changed the feed we buy and I started her on B complex pills...
We’re buying Purina Flock Raiser Today. We already have the oyster shell bag.
A while ago I found a bunch of earth worms in a spot in my driveway (under an old towel I had tossed out after caring for a cat and hadn’t touched for a couple of months, I ended up trashing it) and I gave them to...
We have been giving her liquid Poultry Cell regularly over the last two weeks, wouldn’t that have taken care of the carences? I do admit that we didn’t give it to her every day though. This whole thing has been a bit overwhelming. Especially learning to tube-feed. I cried the first time we did that.
I don’t want to sound dumb but could y’all tell me what to ask my vet for in the morning?? B-12 injection?
And also could you recommend good foods that I can buy (even if I have to mix different foods)? Preferably things I can get from Tractor Supply since there’s one very close to me. But I...
I tried to research it when we rescued Danielle, but I didn’t understand anything and then she (Danielle) started thriving when we brought her Fiona so we assumed it was the companionship and the food Fiona came with (former owner gave us a bag). So we kept buying it. I will change it for sure...
