I have a question. Have you all noticed if the Icelandics have a high immunity towards diseases, parasites, etc.? I am thinking some of these wild type of chickens with varied genetics are stronger/hardier/disease resistant birds overall. I am thinking perhaps disease resistance is being...
We have the big blk orps too and they are big weenies and run from hawks (not that I blame them lol). The turkeys are dumb and just stand there.
The hawks could probably take them out ..they just don't know it. We have both bald and golden eagles here as well as the big black vultures (turkey...
I had several hawk attacks earlier this spring. I heard the same thing about running a large dark bird with your other chickens. I turned my two Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys loose with the free rangers and haven't lost any birds for the longest time. The BBB have dark brown colored backs so...

If they can survive HELL (aka Arizona), they can survive Florida. Iceland is a temperate climate, so I'm sure they would do wonderfully there.
We get pretty hot here (summers can have 115) but we don't have the humidity. I waited through Mary's first year with them to make sure they...
I love the one with the little mohawks. They are vikings lol!!! Have you noticed if the ones with the little crest are growing up to be male or female? Or do they both have it? I read that in Swedish Flower Hens, the females are the ones that can sometimes have a head crest (but not always...

the comb on that roo at the end makes me think of a Viking ship!
LOL, yep it sure does!
Yeah, I agree they should of used that photo with the little roo going down the 'slide' to illustrate thier 'playful personality!'
That is a fabulous article. Very interesting about them possibly having a unique DNA especially when there is such a variety of colors, combs and even egg color with these chickens. I love that photo of the roo at the end. He is really . Very informative and also funny (the part about thier...
Ahhh that's so cool. Mahroni is definitely chicken obsessed if he has air conditioning for the chooks. I can't wait to see what he hatches. They are so interesting looking!
Everyone's Icelandis are beautiful!! What an interesting breed! I had never heard about them before reading this thread. They probably wouldn't do well here due to our heat and humidity, but I think they are gorgeous and I am so glad there are people who are trying so hard to preserve this breed
That is a great story and wonderful chickens. I am glad you got to participate in saving the breed. I would like to do that sometime too, not sure which endangered breed I might like to work with yet but I will have to find some that like hot humid weather lol.
" I think getting accepted into...
