    Broody Hen Thread!

They are a breed that tends to go broody. I had one mixed girl that laid her first 4 ever eggs then went broody. She would stick with the chicks for 3 months where she would lay 2 eggs then go broody again. You won't know for sure until night time. If she prefers to stay on the nest then it is...

Eggs are fine, let her sit again. Block her in a little area like an isolation pen with just the one nesting box and food and water in view of it.

It's called chicken math! No biggie if you have the room. How many eggs do you have all together? If it's not too much you may be able to slip those chicks you are hatching under her when they are done.

If she is truly broody then yes she will wait. Make sure she has something to sit on even if it is a golf ball. Let the eggs become room temp before giving them to her and put them under her at night for the best results. If she is in with other hens I suggest you separate her so the others do...

You want to add them at night but keep in mind that not all broodies take fosters. I would suggest to add a heat lamp area near mom just in case she doesn't keep them and tosses them out. If they can still get to a heat source then they have a better chance and you can bring them inside to brood...

Yes you can hatch them as long as you did not wash them (takes the bloom off). I had to do it with a broody once. Make sure you let the eggs come to room temp before you give them to the broody for best results.

When they start feeling ill they loose the ability to regulate body heat like when we get a fever. I hope she feels better soon!

Not broody, she is sick and can't get warm. Did your vet do a fecal float test for worms? If not, I suggest worming just in case. Did he check for other parasites? They are hard to see. Bring her inside, give her heat to help keep warm, vitamins in the water to perk her up a little bit, and...

My concern with recycled parts of a mattress would be bed bugs...they will bite anything living. They have an exoskeleton so anything natural that would kill ants, fleas, and roaches would work to kill them. Other then that, that is a great idea!

Some do some don't, it depends on how determined the broody is to be a mother. For best results slip the chicks under her at night after a couple of weeks sitting.

If you are unsure then dust her with some Sevin. They now make an all natural one in a green bottle and it works just as well if not better then the 5% in the red bottle. DE is a great preventive but does nothing to treat. Broodies are not into food and water as much as non broody chickens but...

Giving her a bath will stop her if she is broody. Nipping at you is normal and the further along she gets being broody the more she will nip and even growl. Keep an eye on her to make sure she is sure then put some cheap hatching eggs under her for her first brood. Good Luck!

Not a normal breed for broodiness but it does happen. Is she plucking feathers out of her chest yet? Is she sitting on a clutch of eggs and stealing others eggs? Are you finding one really large and really stinky poop a day? Did she stop laying? These are all broody behaviors. Just in case take...

I had a pullet broody that was so determined to have eggs that she would carry them to her box. She would get in one of the other boxes, lay down and scoot an egg up to her chest, then tuck her beak into her chest (around the egg), and stand up and go put it in her nest. I caught her many times...
