    Roosting perchs?

This has been the warmest November i can recall. Very rainy and windy. i have been letting them out and locking them up with no trouble until today. i lost two bantams but thought the bigger ones would be safe. Live and learn. BTW my new farm cull was roosting on my new perch. i didnt...

    Roosting perchs?

BTW, im down to 6 birds now. just lost my favorite isa red to a predator. They will be locked up til spring. She used to eat out of my hand and if my hands were out of reach she would jump up to see if i had anything. Never thought id get attached to a chicken :-( The kids liked her too.

    Roosting perchs?

Ok, here is my new perch design. it took me quite a while to get the distances within .010" or so and level but i got it :-) They are 12" horrizontally starting from the boxes and 24" vertically. Nobody is going to get pooped on and the pipe is gone. What, your chickens dont carry...

    Roosting perchs?

I think I'm going to remove all the perches and build one with 2 stages, one lower and in front with enough room for them to flap away without injury. My birds can get on to the higher perch but sometimes it takes several tries. Isa reds and similar don't fly very well, they flap and hop. My...

    Roosting perchs?

I put the roost over the top of the nest boxes, and use the top of the nest box as the poop board, covered in Sweet PDZ so it is easy to clean and doesn't smell.  Once in a while one of the girls sleeps in the nest box, but most of the time they all sleep on the roost on on the poop board.

    Roosting perchs?

They have pretty flexible feet so I would think 2x4s would work well. My plan was to have the perch located so they could fly to the perch then hop into the nest but locating the perch above the nest makes it less uesful for that. The bantams had no problem but the reds don't fly as well. I'm...

    Roosting perchs?

The pipe was the original design, the 2x4 was added later. The bantams liked the higher pipe perch but they were taken so I may try removing the pipes. I hesitated because I have to cut the pipe in front of the nests to remove it. Hate to destroy it but, you are right, it needs to come out...

    Roosting perchs?

Here are my perches. They have not really used any of them except to hop into the nests.

    Roosting perchs?

Well, my first coop used broom handles and 3/4" pipe and they all stayed on them all nite. I tried the 2x4 because so many have mentioned it. Why flat side up? Seems like it would be hard to grip that way?

    Roosting perchs?

Well.....my idea isn't working. I used 2x4 on edge, about a foot in front and a few inches higher than the nest lip and they still prefer the nest boxes or front lip to roost. I'm using a nest box/feed hanger design which may make the perches too high. I added a 5 gal bucket with vertical...
