Hi everyone!
Just dropping by to say hello, and check out my chicks! So big now! Only got 2 out of 12 eggs, so not the best (but hey, first time hatching, and first time mumma hen), but better than nothing right? Anyone know whether these are roos or hens? I'm thinking the black is a roo...
I need some advice! My chicks have started hatching and now I realise how much of a newbie I am!

Wow, this thread moves fast!! I broke my phone, so have no internet access at home. Poor me. :P
But Hi everyone! Just letting you all know that we are trying to hatch some chickens with a broody hen! Picked up 6 ameraucana and 6 frizzle eggs (I think new hampshire/australorp frizzle?). Mumma...
Ditto! Just got home, kids into bed, and headed off to sleep myself. Can't believe my 4.5 and 6.5 yr olds made it to 2am!! Or myself for that matter!
*yawn*
And I'll ask here, in case no one responds to my other post (gotta remember its NYE and not everyone is trawling chicken forums! ), looking at my run (and ignoring the lack of housing which is being fixed), do you think it is enough room for 12 hens? I thought I had a grasp on the whole space...
I'm a real newbie! Only a few months!
And I just found out today that council laws mean I can't get a lamb to help with grass! You need to have 2000 sqm for any animals (we are on a 1400 block), and the animal can't come within 30 mtres of any housing (which is impossible with how other houses...
Thanks! I'm not really good with building things, and I really had no idea what I was doing. I made it up as I built it! After seeing some of the coops/runs on here, I can see how mine has lots of room for improvement! But I am pretty proud I managed to get this much done!
Finally got the photos to upload! My chook run. The grey box is the nesting box, and you can't see it, but behind it is an old plastic dog kennel that they sleep in. See what I mean about lots of room to roam, but not much actual "housing"? The bottom picture was this weeks addition, some extra...
Lucky, until I have to mow the grass!!! Thinking of getting a sheep!!
Well my new girls are a bit nasty!! Quite a few were pecked when I collected them, and there is a bit of fighting happening! But I think I read somewhere that isa browns can get nasty in small spaces? And where they were was...
I'd love to see everyones coops/runs! My backyard is HUGE! 1400sqm block, with a small cottage house, so lots and lots of room. But my chicken run is very very rustic. I made it all by myself, and I'm not at all a handywoman! I use a dog kennel for sleeping in, and I got a nesting box when I...
I'm going to pick up two new chickens today! A gold laced wyandotte, and a leghorn x araucana (depending on if it looks healthy, I've seen pics of the wyandotte but not the other).
Will post pics later!
Yup, its hard to see, but definitely has the same saddle feathers. I just told her thanks but no thanks, and let her know about the livestock markets.
Thanks for your help guys!
And although its hard to tell from the photo, the other chicken looked almost identical, so I bet its a rooster as well. Which might explain why they are free!!!
She just has the two, so the two close ups are the same chook, and then the one in the background on the left hand side is the other. I just don't want to drive 45 mins each way to get roosters that I end up having to give away/sell. How certain would you be that the bottom one is a roo?
She sent me a video, which I couldnt get off my phone, so had to screen shot the video! So sorry for poor quality shots. I reckon they look like roosters...
