How to Break a Broody Hen

Quote: Agreed! You've got to get them off the nest and off the ground so air gets to their belly. No idea why, just know it's what works. If they've been brooding long enough to have lost a good number of feathers off their bellies, then it will likely take more than a couple of days in the...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Tom - if she's been broody that long, a couple of days probably won't do the trick. You may need to look at five days or so.. Poor little thing, I know it's the voices in her head making her do this. I'm fortunate, my broody doesn't usually stay that way long enough to create serious health...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Quote: That's how my fayoumi is. She'll go broody for a few days, maybe a week with us removing the eggs from her every day. After about a week or so she must get tired of it because soon you see her back out with the other girls. Someone told me it's not hormones, but 'voices' that make...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Quote: That's interesting, I'd never heard of that. My little one will sit on them one at a time and add them in as the other hens lay. Is she trying to gather a clutch?

How to Break a Broody Hen

Couple of things here. 1 - I love "Perma broody" and may have to use it in the future! 2 - Our neighbors had a particularly stubborn broody hen and left her to sit on the eggs. She became the Defender of the Coop - sadly, she never had a little super hero cape though :-( . Because their...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Nope! It's either hormones or "voices". No one knows for sure - but no rooster required. All I have is three hens and one goes broody three or four times/year. Oddly, she is the least consistent layer and is of a breed not celebrated for their laying or brooding. Go figure.

How to Break a Broody Hen

If her chest is irritated from where the feathers have fallen out, you necessarily need to cage her. If you don't have a cage readily available, you can construct one. I'd check your local classfieds, Craigslist, or Freecycle first. The cage I have was made by a coworker, whose wife did a...

@New2ThisChick - Let us know how it goes! I'll be interested in hearing from you.

How to Break a Broody Hen

It might work, might not. Problem is if she finds eggs elsewhere (if any of the others lay somewhere else) she'll just sit on those. I've no idea how or why the cage works, but I do believe it has something to do with air getting to their bellies. I know last night after I let my others out, I...

How to Break a Broody Hen

No, just removing the eggs won't break her once she gets it into her mind to sit on the nest. I have an Egyptian Fayoumi (not known for their laying ability or broody nature) who just went broody on me over the weekend. My other hens have never shown any interest in sitting on the nest, this is...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Just a quick update here -- my LittleBird, my Brooder, came off the nest by herself one day. I didn't have to lock her up or fight her or push her off. She'd been on the nest for so long and had gotten so used to me moving her to get the eggs that she started letting me put her on the perch so...

How to Break a Broody Hen

I'll be putting my broody hen back in the cage shortly. sigh. She lasted about four weeks, then went back to her evil twin personality. It's amazing how hateful and aggressive a timid little hen can become when the voices tell her to sit on the eggs. Once you collect the eggs out from under...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Woot! Broody hen is back to her old timid self! Took her out of the broody buster last Friday evening when I let the other girls out to free range. She went right out with them, never gave it another thought. At dusk when the other girls went into the pen to roost, she followed suit, never...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Thanks for the idea! I think I may try tomorrow night, as I'll not be getting home until 11PM tonight, and the birds won't be put up until late. I can put the other two in the coop, then open the cage and let the Noisy One out to roost overnight. I figure if I put their treats outside the run...

How to Break a Broody Hen

EHFH doesn't appear to be settling down - she hates the cage - but I plan on letting her out tomorrow evening. We'll see how that goes. If she's back on the nest, it will be back to the cage. Oddly you mention the re-establishment of pecking order. I'm a bit concerned about that here, as...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Well I am happy to report our EHFH* is in the broody buster now. It took two adults with elbow-length leather gloves AND a pillowcase over LittleBird's (her 'real name') head but we got her in there. She was sitting on TEN eggs - none of them her own. If you've ever seen a Fayoumi you know...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Thankfully I have a friend who used to rehab wildlife so I'm now the proud owner of a squirrel cage! It's two levels, so I figure I'll flip it over and put her in what used to be the bottom and is now the top - that may get her up off the ground far enough. If not, we'll have a squirrel cage...

How to Break a Broody Hen

Hi Everyone -- I knew I could count on the BYC gang to have the info I needed! My timid little Fayoumi has gone broody on me - she's the one I'd least expect this from. She's gone from timid to ferocious practically over night! I'll have to find a wire-bottomed cage and QUICK! I've taken to...
