Quote: yeah I only wanted two when my hubby said I should get three...so that lingered in the back of my head, I only got two at the feedstore, because I am VERY SURE I want different colors/looks, all friendly docile breeds, nothing flighty...and since I am not going to get a TON from a...

    Barred Rock & Buff Orpington

Awww...good to hear, because I'm SERIOUSLY contemplating getting two more chicks...a frizzle and either an EE or a silkie (sort of depends on what the feed store gets in, but those are the breeds they are supposed to get in) I'm sold on the frizzle, but want different looking birds in my...

    Barred Rock & Buff Orpington

We have been getting the chicks out with the kids at least once for a long visiting session daily (and have now added 'treat giving', although that is TOUGH for my daughter she wants to keep the worms as pets too!, so we try to make the 'treat time' when she's napping or not around) and we...

So I'm watching my girls grow and the buff orpington is for sure growing bigger faster then the barred rock...is this normal for their breeds? Both are so friendly and interested in what life has to offer, I'm so pleased with both of them so far!!!

so far my BR seems to be the first one to jump in my hand...but the BO is really not far behind, she's pretty quick to as well...and it's funny, I'd have to say for 'alert-ness' they are pretty equal so far...my BR was the first to investigate the brooder and the BO was the first to investigate...

I'm in love that is for sure! Does anyone know why the BR's wings are sooo short compared to the BO's? Seems like she's got these teeny tiny dwarf wings popping out of her back, but the other chick, the BO has small but decent wings...is it just a breed thing, like dogs who have long or short...

We've only had them home & in their new brooder for a few hours, but they seem to really be adapting well!!! The BR seems to jump into my hand when I just lay it in the bottom of the brooder...the BO comes to check it out, but not as quick and readily as the BR...they both seem to LIKE being...

I'm teetering...I really only want two, but for many reasons I'm considering three...if I got a third, I might get one from the other feedstore on Friday a Rhode Island Red...part of me wants an Easter Egger, but they just seem too risky (flighty) and I'd hate to have one get killed by my dogs...

    Barred Rock & Buff Orpington

is it pretty standard for feedstores to get chicks in and NOT sell them for a few days before putting them on sale? I think it was cruel of my feedstore to let me drool all day today and not sell two freek'n chicks to me I understand they want to make sure they are adjusting well...but what's...

Quote: The feedstore only got 50 chicks in (4 breeds) and today there were already 5 (including myself) begging them to sell today...and I hear there is going to be a mad dash of folks rushing the door tomorrow AM...my only comfort is the other feed store is also getting the same breeds in on...

Quote: Their 'free range' area has loads of oak trees, so I'm wondering if they will "TRY" to roost up there and if they do, they might easily get out of the fenced area... How do you clip their wings and is it cruel in the way of taking away their ability to get away if need be??? Sort of...

great stories...I love to hear of them following you about and letting you hold them...that is what we're looking for...we'll hand raise them and then when large enough, will be free range with a coop at night. You are helping me lean more and more towards one BR & one BO Tell me more...

Here is my set up...any suggestions...the stuffed animals are in there as 'extra' because I'm only getting two chicks... I would like the amarucana (sp?) but I need birds that are more likely to stay on the ground, our fence is 4 or 5 feet and there isn't a way to top net it...if they get...

    Barred Rock & Buff Orpington

Sooo Barred Rock & Buff Orpington are the breeds my local feed store will have up for sale tomorrow...along with amerucana & white leghorn... What are your opinions on the BR & BO for 'friendly' factor? Are they better or worse then Rhode Island Reds? I'm hearing the amerucana and leg horn...
