    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

We were looking in Arkansas. In an area my husband and I may have to move to for work. We recently found out I'm pregnant so if he doesn't get the job there we will stay in our current house and just change a few things.

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

We agree with that. We would prefer neighbors in distant site, but not close enough to hear. Hearing our neighbors is one of our biggest problems here!

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

Well the house was actually okay, but the area it was in wasn't... so we aren't interested in buying it. The neighboors just aren't our cup of tea (they came out to stare at us), and they are closer and their houses aren't the nicest at all..... so we will probably be looking at building if we...

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

Where we are looking at buying land can be $2,000/acre and up. We are looking at a small house on 3.75 acres today though, it is a REO and SUPER affordable... but god knows what the inside looks like! I'm hopeful for now though... if it isn't TOO bad than we could probably fix it up, fence it...

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

The way you would have done it wouldn't have bothered me, I would have been none the wiser and if someone did tell me I probably would have understood that they were probably freaking and wanted to see them. The fact they couldn't get them until the next day wasn't my call, I explained that I...

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

You would have jumped my fence rather than knocking on my front door? I'm sorry but that is absolutely wrong, and shows a lack of respect! I would have let him in the backyard without an issue to look at the horses. He had no proof of ownership or vet records, horses NEED a coggins test! He...

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

Right now we are looking at buying some land and getting something like this built on it It is around $20,000 for this 1344 sq ft, and its JUST a shell so roof, exterior walls, roof. The $20,000 includes vinyl or metal siding since that lasts longer and is less upkeep than going for a cabin...

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

Well today has been interesting. Get up and get ready to go to pick up peat humus to find 2 horses on a busy road. Grab them (they were on leads still) and call animal control who ask me to put them in my backyard, then never call me back. Talk to the horse farm behind us and they aren't theirs...

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

Most jobs are 30 minutes from my current house and I don't even live out in the country. Where we are looking now would be a commute to where my husband will hopefully be getting a job in the future!

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

I haven't used that site, but it didn't bring up anything in the area we are looking at. I do see what you mean though. I found 4 nice houses on over 12 acres (one was 25) for under 75k!

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

Lucky! Not where we are looking at. The 20 acres I'm looking at is only $20,000 though, so its a steal. The only house I have found is on 16 acres for $58,000 but its a total gut job which makes me prefer building my own, because even gutting it there are some things that aren't changeable...

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

Our current house costed more than that and its on 1/3 acre and needed remodeling and more work! Once/If Hubby gets the job I'll be calling around to get estimates to make sure I have an accurate budget, and we will have to list our current house and sell it! I'm just anxious to move to the country!

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

The land we are looking at does have a lot of trees though, so we may be able to save recoup money by selling timber =) Either way, I'm just looking at our options now. It is likely my husband will get a job in this area =)

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

If we go that route I would definately make sure utilities are in place! I just got done doing a rough cost estimate for a 1300 sq ft build and I'm under $80,000 including the land so far which includes septic, foundation, electrical, plumbing, shell house, interior walls, kitchen, bathroom, and...

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

I'm looking at the costs of building a place on land I found in our destination range cheap. $1,000 an acre, not landlocked, and with utilities avaliable (other than septic/plumbing, would have to check if that meant on site or how much to run it to the house).

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

That is AWESOME! With that acreage you can be self sufficient... get out of that rat race, especially if you have no mortgage or utilities!

    Dreaming of buying a "homestead"

Good job! Is it just you and her building it? Have you been doing projects like this your whole life? Do you know how much you have invested to date? How will you shower etc here? Are you doing solar panels for electricity? Sorry I'm asking a lot of questions but I think it is really interesting!
