X2.
The strange thing with my serama is that she is/was a good mom, hatching many chicks of different colors. Watching the hen it looked like she thought there was something on the wing and she was trying to get it off. Of course each time she pecked/grabbed the wing the chick would chirp in...
This is from my own experience. There seems to be a period of time after the eggs hatch that hens seem to accept any chick. After that time they recognize their chicks from others and will drive away any chick that is not their own. Chicks of the same color as those that are hatched under the...
What size/breed hen? What size/breed chicks? A small hen can only care for about 6 chicks of a larger breed-a dozen if they are a smaller breed. A large hen can care for a dozen chicks easily. Whatever number you decide to give her, do all at once. The older her chicks become the less likely it...
While the hen may stay alert at night, she can not see in the dark. That's why it's the best time to give her more chicks. Hopefully, in the morning she will just accept them as hers and act like they had always been with her. Definitely take down the heat lamp. The chicks need to be put with...
I had just the opposite experience. My tame, gentle SILKIE went bezerk when her serama chicks hatched. The first time I tried to look at the chicks the hen flew in my face and left a scraped and cut arm in her wake. I did not get a close look at the chicks until they were weaned and the hen...
Many times I have given "late" chicks back to the hen. She will accept the new chick and the siblings will not hurt it. A couple days is not enough to make much difference. More than four days might be different. Please post the results.
I have watched my hens a great deal when their chicks first hatch and from what I see it takes time before they recognize chicks as their own. I will be most interested to read what happens. I rather think you could have given the hen the new chicks during the day and she would have accepted...
