My serama breeding, and showing project!

Please explain what you mean by, "...not keep them alive." Chicks? I have had only one chick die in two years (almost). Some have weighed less than 12 grams on hatch day. Small-yes, but not fragile. I have raised many dozens of chicks. If you like serama maybe try a different line. I have not...

My serama breeding, and showing project!

It seems a number of people are having hatching problems; puts me on edge. I have eggs due to hatch this weekend and the weather has been hot and humid/wet for weeks. My hope is that broody hens not only regulate temperature, but humidity as well; if not, I'm going to be out of luck. AGAIN...

It would be reasonable to think so-provided the rooster is small, but the genetics on serama are all over the place and I'm seeing a huge variety in chick sizes from the same hen/rooster and the same egg size.

Small for sure. I'm still waiting for a 10 gram at hatch. I had one hatch last night from two small parents. I'll check tonight when I get home. This chick is from the egg that was knocked out of the nest. Stone cold when I found it; quite the surprise to find it hatched this morning.

Curious Prizepete-I'm trying to breed for smaller size. My latest chicks hatched at 12 grams and 22 grams at two weeks. How does this compare to yours? Your chicks look so tiny...

I have no buff serama, but if you type it into a search box many images will come up.

I have not really seen a preference, but I have better luck using straw instead of shavings. I found that a straw nest holds its shape better resulting in less eggs being accidentally pushed aside and better hatches.

Yes. I have three hens that have raised three, four, and four broods this year. All three hens turned one year old May 1st. And one of the three is now a grandmother.

I asked similar questions on frizzle genetics. The realm of chicken genetics is unsure and very confusing on some issues. To give an answer to the questions you have to ask an experienced breeder who knew about dominant, incomplete dominant, codominant, recessive genes, sex-linked genetics. And...

My serama breeding, and showing project!

I use a variety of sizes and shapes. Anywhere from a cereal bowl for my smaller hens to 12 X 12 nest boxes to salad bowls, dog dishes, and anything else I can find. My B hens could use an 8 X 8, but I think you'd have better luck going a bit bigger. I have great luck getting hens to go broody...
