17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

Nobody molting, all still laying and the broody Ginger has resumed laying too. Ginger hatched Louisiana on July 10, she's been done with her for about two weeks now. She won't have anything to do with her baby anymore!

We did have a broody! One of the caramel queens. I put 6 light Sussex eggs under her (we don't have a rooster, I got them from True North) and she hatched out two chicks, both pullets. One got taken by a rat at one week old, the other made it through and is now almost as big as her mom! She...

I'm actually not sure! I sold them both to a Neighbour who butchered them at home - I never asked and it's not likely he weighed them anyways. One was rather large and the other small, I would say about 4-5 lbs for the larger and 3-4 lbs for the smaller one.

Oh that has to be so frustrating!

17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

What??! That's crazy! Ours looked quite different, the males grew long tail feathers etc while the females remained short. Our black female is the top hen, and I've seen her mount the other girls too. But she's a layer so no doubt a hen! At about 12 weeks the differences were obvious. We ended...

Two eggs from our larger barred rock in the last four days, so one of each variety is laying now. Hopefully the other girls get with the program soon! My roosters like my smallest pullets too - I think they're just easier prey for them haha

I'm sorry to hear you're having so many troubles! We have major construction going on next door, not even 40 feet from the chicken house and they don't seem bother by it a bit. City birds! I kept 8 pullets, 2 of each variety. I sold 6 to my aunt, and two roosters were sold to a Neighbour for...

17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

Hey Tatiana! Well, the boys went off to the processor at 16 week, MAN were they huge! The Sussex dressed out 5-5.5 lbs, and the Barred Rock at 4.5-5 lbs. They are delicious with gorgeous yellow marbled fat (sorry if you are not eating your cockerels, if you are I would be thrilled to hear how...

Oh you're just about 15 Km from me. Near port moody right? All that back country behind you would bring a lot lore predators than I have!

17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

Where are you? We have predators (coyotes, raccoons, roaming dogs, roaming cats) here but also lots of natural things for them to eat so they don't seem very interested in breaking into my (or my neighbours) coop. I'm most worried about aerial attacks as I am in the river delta and have loads of...

17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

Yours are looking great! Here's my set up and some recent pictures :D The little coop door is open 24/7, and the fenced area is totally secured. They get access to the green lawn daily under supervision, but all 22 can actually still fit in the little house at night! Not for too much longer...

17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

Chicken Little is back in with the flock! And is the only one with a name haha. They are all treating her well, but she is just a naturally more timid pullet - which is likely why she got picked on in the first place. I don't think she has gotten up the courage to leave the coop yet, all the...

17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

I'll keep you posted! Since most of your Sussex appear to be Roos it might be a good fit for you :) We have been calling her Chicken Little due to her "sky is falling" attitude ;)

17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

Yes! They've been out two nights now and are just fine. The coop is quite small (we only intend to keep 6-8) so with the 250 watt heat lamp it's warm in there. I even have the vent cracked. They were in my basement (insulated but with the heat turned off) before going out so I don't think it's...

17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

We are OUTSIDE. But too "chicken" to leave the little coop, haha. I'm not sure how big your chicks are but mine are huge! The coop door is 8" for your reference. The Sussex Roos started showing wattles today, they hatched on December 23. I've also had a bit of a pecking problem, as the...

17 baby chicks hatched on Christmas

I found the Sussex really easy to sex, the hens feathered way faster. My Roos still have just small wing feathers comparatively but at really big. Same for the barred rock. Upside is the Sussex Roos taste good! Same for the barred rock.

I only have a roost at about 12", but I am sure they could! The top of the brooder is about 3.5 feet and they can boost up almost that high when they're excited. They should be outside in the coop/run this week!! So exciting. They need more stuff to do :) They are super active. I'll post some...
