Golden Cuckoo Marans Eggs - WA State - The stories

We had a set back this spring as we lost our primary breeder roo. Back-up roo is in the pen, and the girls are currently in a loooong molt. We have a few chicks on the ground that show some promise. Limited success in getting feathers on the legs of the right birds. It seems that if the chick...

We have not seen any silver pullets. We do have two pullets that are very light in the Gold. All Silver Looking chicks have been cockerals. You need to wait it out, some will develop gold saddle and hackle feathers.

I will have to look at my records to be certain, however from memory (which is sometimes questionable) the mottled chicks generally are pullets that will have a light tan neck, and more of a brown barred body. We have seen two or possibly three like this in our hatchings. Your other...

Tina, We still have you on the list for eggs, you just need to say when We have 8 Cuckoos from the same lines, all but one with feathered shanks. Color was good on the eggs we set, and hope it is as good or better on the eggs that they lay. BTW, the Khakis are laying at a rate of 56 eggs...

My vote - The two on the right in the first photo are pullets and will have good coloring. The two in the middle, the lighter one a cockerel, should have good coloring, the "mottled" one, no guess, could go either way. Probably a pullet. The two on the left, look to be poor on color, one...

Some of the youngsters coming along: Pullet, good feather color. Cockeral, good feather coloring coming in. Cockeral, one that hatched out in the wheaten coloration, feathering in as a yellow cuckoo? He has a few darker feathers in both wings and tail. I will try for better pictures...

chickenlisa, Sorry for the confusion, there was a lot of traffic yesterday, and I was checking in on an irregular basis and got crossed up. Anyway, I have you scheduled. As far as the meat bird question - I do not know. They grow out to good sized stock, although I would still consider them...

Ahhhh, The new run is complete, and the Barred Rocks like me for a few minutes anyway. PM's sent to those that expressed interest. Melissa, The chick color you show in your photos is pretty much what we are seeing, with a Silver Cuckoo chick or two mixed in. We have about 60 on the ground...

Melissa, eta - Spelling - Sorry I appreciate your input, it is very valuable information. I think that your Marans are typicaly what I have seen from Bill's line and they are a work in progress. That is interesting to hear, and it is good to know I am not too far off base with them. I do...

Golden Cuckoo Marans Eggs - WA State - The stories

So, here we go, the story on my birds: I purchased these birds as adults. The gentlemen I got them from received these initially as chicks mixed in an order of Silver Cuckoos from Braden lines. Egg color is running mostly around a 4 right now, however during our recent cold spell, colors were...
