I don't think dyeing chicks is a good idea. Imagine if we did this to children - people would be in an outrage.
Chicks are living creatures that should not have to be subjected to silly treatments like being injected with dye inside the egg.
Sorry about your luck. This has happened to other people as well - lots of cats getting into things and knocking incubators over. Fortunately my cats like the incubator and the chicks and never mess with it. Putting it in a safe place and away from other pets (and children) is always a good idea.
He might have a "sticky" head. When they hatch sometimes the fluid from the egg will dry on to the down if the humidity isn't high enough. I've had it happen a couple of times to chicks that hatch late. You can carefully wash his head with warm water and dish soap.
If it is day 20, I would just leave it. If you smell something rotten in the incubator the egg could be rotten and ready to explode. If this is the case, remove it. If they are getting ready to hatch it could be that the chick has broken the egg shell. Are the other chicks pipping at this point?
After applying copious amounts of nail polish to my cracked egg, it hatched right on time on Day 21.
My cutest chick came from this egg. Glad I could save it!
Thanks Chooky! She is still sitting on the egg so apparently it may not be a reject after all. Tomorrow is day 20. I checked her nest this morning and there was zero activity. Good luck with your batch too!!
This is a great thread! I found a cracked egg on day 16 in the box with my broody. I put fingernail polish on it but don't hold out much hope for it hatching. I'm not sure how long it has been cracked since I don't inspect the eggs everyday.
