Congrats on saving the two chicks. Sometimes they just need a little help. I'm not one that can sit and watch them die in the shell. Everyone has their own way of doing things.

i have assisted during my last two hatches. I realized (after doing a lot more reading) that the Marans eggs I have don't lose enough moisture because of the thicker coating on the shells. As a result, the chicks grow too large and can't turn around to get in position for hatching. About half...

Awesome! My February hatch is just 8 weeks old now. They only get to go out during the day since it is still too cold at night to leave them on their own. I just kept two pullets and sold the rest (all 48 of them).

Haha, that is funny! My thermometers agree, but unfortunately they agree that one side of the incubator is hotter than the other. I believe the temp difference killed off some of my chicks after lockdown. I ended up with a 73% hatch rate on non-shipped eggs, which is pretty low for me...

You can try to candle the eggs to see if there is anything moving in them. I did that to my "duds". I saw movement in two and heard peeping from a third. Those three eggs hatched late, but the rest were dead already. I'm wishing you luck and more chicks! I have a mercury thermometer and a...

Maybe it depends on what kind of incubator you have. Personally, I have not had any hatching problems and I take my chicks out whenever there are a handful of them that are ready for the brooder. Maybe it is my OCD, but it bothers me to have the chicks running around the incubator knocking...

Agreed - take him out. You can spray warm water lightly on the sides of the incubator or mist the eggs if the humidity drops. You should hear some chirping coming from the other eggs by now. Good luck!

Good advice! I have taken all my chicks out of the incubator at this point since it is Day 22. There are no eggs that have pipped. My humidity is around 80%. There is chirping coming from at least one of the eggs. I have decided to let them sit until this afternoon and then revisit helping...

This must be the longest hatch ever! My chicks have been hatching since Friday and should be finished by now. It is day 22. However, I had eggs left over that have not pipped, but I could hear chirping in the incubator. I candled everyone, tossed some that were late quitters, and that...

Two chicks hatched at 1 a.m. and only one since then. This is a slow hatch for sure! They are really starting to pip now, so that is a good sign. I'm hoping to get some sleep tonight! Will post pics later.

Today is day 20 for my chicken eggs. There was peeping coming from the incubator this morning and I saw one of the eggs wobbling. I'm expecting a few pips when I get home from work and some chicks overnight. Now I'm just watching the clock until it's quittin' time!

Day 19 today! This is the most boring time for hatching eggs. :( Fortunately I'm at work and don't have the temptation of messing with the eggs. Like many of you, I've had trouble this hatch keeping my humidity up. I filled a spray bottle with hot water this morning and sprayed down the...

Give them another day or two. If your temp was just a little off they make take longer to hatch. I have hatched lots of eggs from my young hens and even some pullet eggs as well. As long as the eggs are fertile I don't think it matter is the hen is over a year old or not.

Such cute chicks! Today is only day 14 for me. I candled all the eggs. Everyone looks perfect except for half of the legbar eggs. No surprise there! These eggs are so hard to hatch. I pulled two that had quit and marked quite a few others to candle again right before lockdown...

You aren't doing anything wrong, but this is the reason I made my post. A lot of people are candling starting at day 3, looking for movement, taking videos of the embryos, etc. It gives the more inexperienced hatchers the idea that it should be done like that all the time. Eggs get dropped...

When candling, I don't look for movement in any of my eggs. I look for veining, a growing chick, a blood ring, or the dreaded black floating blobs that move when you turn the egg. The candling is done as quickly as possible so the growing chick is not stressed. I do not candle ever after day...

My last hatch was the same way! Day 21 arrived and before I knew it I had 51 chicks! The hatch before that I had the temp too high and everyone was early. Just be patient! :)

What part of Oregon are you in? I'm near Seattle, but would be interested in doing an egg trade of some kind if you'd like. I have not tried shipped eggs because I'm afraid they wouldn't hatch due to damage during transport. Mostly I have EEs, turkens and some olive eggers, but I should have a...
