There is a big swap at Milton KY on Labor Day weekend. That's just across the river from Madison. Usually a lot of just about everything. Just have to watch quality of what you buy--healthy looking, etc.
I found one of my white bantam cochin hens (best of breed in her last show!) in my trio dead yesterday. Don't know what to do for them except keep them shaded and hydrated.
Several young ones that I had moved outside are free ranging at a younger age than I would normally allow, but they turn...
Nothing here in the south central part except some high wind for a few minutes. I was almost home when the wind hit and stuff was blowing everywhere. That went on for about 20 minutes. No sign of anything wet!
I've not been getting emails for this thread and thought that it was resting...
The Amity livestock auction is on Tuesday evenings--that's on SR 31 south of Franklin.
The Columbus show is next Saturday and there will be sale pens.
The Milton KY (just across the river from Madison) is Mother's Day weekend and there are always lots of chickens there. Saturday is the best day.
I'm not from Missouri but I definitely have a "show me" attitude. When I hear of something that someone swears by, I generally want to test it myself as long as no damage is being done to determine whether it's simply coincidental correlation or actual cause and effect. Wow, am I starting to...
Inside coops are generally already there with a limit as to the number of birds that can be in one at one time. The outside areas are what we set up on our own.

You only need to have your birds tested if you're taking them to a meet out of state. If you live in Milton KY you don't have to have your birds tested for that swap. But if you live across the river in Madison, you do--crazy, huh? That's why I did the bloodtesting class, so that I...
The Milton swap on Mother's Day weekend is always a good place. That's just over the river from Madison, so it's in Kentucky and requires pullorum-typhoid testing. Where in central Indiana are you? You can call the Indiana Poultry Association and they will notify testers in your county so...
Wow, SebrightMom, you've been busy since last I saw you! Looking forward to seeing you and LAMom at Gateway. I'm taking some birds to show and a few to sell--I've sold several of the ones I planned to take to sell in the last couple of weeks.
Going to the Bluegrass show tomorrow, if I get my...
I can vouch for LAMom's and Heather's silkies--they have nice ones! I have several of theirs.
I'll be attending Gateway as well, and I hope that Heather and Sally will be there. I usually see them at the shows.
Had some real downers lately; critters got into one of my pens and killed 7...
My success with shipped BCM eggs has not been great--not that many shipped eggs have been spectacular overall. I should have (I hope!) chicks later this spring and plan to be coming to the Knox swaps in May and June. My trio has done well in shows, so I'm hoping for some quality chicks...
Hi Melissa--Good luck with that hatch! My first hatch of the year is about 6 weeks old now and I have eggs in the incubator--took a breathing spell after the first one.
Are you looking for large fowl eggs? I have light Brahmas in a pure pen and plan to get my Easter eggers separated from the...
I'm loving the warmer temps--haven't had any heat for 10 days. I've sold my place on contract and told the buyer last spring that the boiler was on its way out and have hounded him ever since. He waited until it completely blew to do anything and, of course, heating companies were backed up...
A recent issue of Backyard Poultry had articles on winterizing. The consensus there was that chickens should not be shut in without outside ventilation in winter. The closed in coops trap moisture, which leads to molds and respiratory infections. Mine are all in buildings with an open (wired)...
No snow here, but ice. I need to go out and take care of everybody. Late with it today because I was holding off in the futile hope that the ice would go away, but guess I'm going to have to take my chances. Hope I don't land flat on my back! Also that I can get doors open to feed and water...
