The only problems with shavings I have seen are well documented with cedar. Even the fumes especially in an enclosed coop. Right now I am using Rice hulls OMG they love those but when the coop gets rebuilt it will be sand if I can.

They look pretty fine to me. I bed my horse down with Rice hulls. These would be for the little teeny bits some horses scatter about.

The page has a pretty complete description even to the spacing which is 5/16 which is...

Pitch forks are generally used to muck stalls out ,so what they consider closely spaced might still be to open for small chicken poop and sand.

The chickens sleep on their perches.... not in the shavings... So as long as you provide a draft free space you are good to go. They provide their own BTUS.... LOL.

Well I guess I am better off buying shavings then. Don't have any of those around here that you wouldn't get shot at by someone trying to get to it.
Most sand and gravel companys will deliver a couple of yards for a nominal fee. For instance I bought three cubic yards of sand for...

Get cleaned sand. They run it through a kiln to dry it out so there is nothing living in it. Plus it wont be dusty. get the kind with large and small particles in it too. That way the chickens can get their grit.

If you do consider putting water proofing in the cement so you can wash it easily and the poop doesn't soak in. Personally I would do concrete but only under a layer of sand or bedding..... chickens need to scratch.....

people who complain about dusty sand are not getting washed sand....
So, is it safe to say that I should stick to washed sand as I already have?
LOL.... yep.

I finally put sand in my brooders as well, and I am LUVIN' IT! I can clean all the brooders in a fraction of the time they used to take, water spills no longer cause a problem by spoiling spilled feed if I can't get to it immediately, a little Stall Dry stirred in dries out such spills...

I have seen an old fashioned oil pan you put down in the garage to catch drips from the car used as a poop tray.... filled with SAND. Walmart also has boot trays in the Door matt department. These are made of heavy duty black plastic. Deep enough for sand. Then there is the No...

Wow I like your setup a lot. Put the food and water in a nest box and now you can load up from the outside, and use what ever kind of feeder or waterer you want. Very very nice. "scribble scribble.... Note number 483 for my next coop"
And the Tie wraps on your access ramp for...

And it wouldn't be cheap in the long run. Cat litter is designed to absorb moisture as someone else suggested but another point is once it gets really wet it becomes slick as snot. Because its Clay. Then it will ball up on your chickens feet and they will eat more....
Sand...

You will get a little of that but it wont be the whole run. You could also take an old tire and lay it flat and fill it with sand on top of the sand to give them a nice dusting hole. I have an old tractor tire somewhere I used to use for training my draft horse.... Or you could get...
