The dimensions in my first coop are in feet and inches to maximize the efficiency of using standard lumber in the US. The siding were I believe about $40 a sheet when I built the coop in 2011.

Thanks! I made the boxes (and feeder) last minute with scraps so it was on the fly. Think I cut out a 14x14 bottom pieces of ply wood, then cut the two sides and the top piece to make the front opening 10 inches tall? I just nailed them together with 2x4 front and back lips and hoped for the...

It's funny how things keep growing when you get started! Most factory coops are way too small and must go by the commercial 1 sq foot per bird idea, vs the 4 sq ft inside and 10 sq feet outside each. Else it can be pretty high maintenance. Good luck with your project!

I've always intended to do this, but still have not gotten around to it... a year and a half later? Just waiting for a hole to show up through the floor. So far the feral cat colony has seemed to keep any rats or mice in check. I can surely say, making a 300 mile each way commute, to work sun up...

Thanks everyone! It's still holding up great! I only have 7 total in there now (3 leghorn hens, 2 jersey giant hens, 2 jersey giant roos) but could probably put in a dozen average sized birds without problems. The JG's are HUGE and each JG girl is about 2x the size of the leghorns. Of course...

Quote: I recommend to my female friends in search of an all-in-one model to take their lunches and hang out in the CSE/EE atrium at their local University. LOL

Quote: No wire covering the vents. I purposely left a 2 or so inch gap all the way around the entire roof line by not bringing up the siding to match. I didn't bother putting wire over it because I don't think anything will scale the wall to get up and over it. As for covering to keep bugs...

I did use the points on both sides! Haven't been knocked out yet...even with a few chickens flying into it. For rev one of the windows, I did buy quarter round round "wood" and intended to do it as you described (and saw on youtube) but the quarter round I ended up with was some sort of...

Quote: I'll probably put up to a dozen in there, but probably less. Keeping 8 in there for now. I started with 12 chicks about 15 years ago when I was in middle school. Until today they lived in portable tractor style housing. I still have 3 other smaller tractors/coops, but only the brooder...

Quote: I bet there is an Italian all-in-one unit somewhere. I found the display model in differential equations class back in undergrad and claimed it then. :p

Quote: I did make my own windows. Cut 2x4's into sections VERY carefully and used things called "gazing points" to hold the glass in. Being the "youngin" I am apparently, I did not know what glazing points were until doing this project! Biggest tip for the glass frame part is to make sure...

Thanks! About the rafter ties, from the instructions I found online from strong tie, it shows them placed on the outside and on the inside. So I don't think it really matters. If everyone put them on the outside... I might be the wrong one! Think the important part is that you make sure you...

UPDATE Three more days working and here is the result so far! All the ply is nailed in every 6 inches on edges and every 12 inches otherwise. All gaps caulked or puttied prior to painting. . Apple-a-day Red exterior red with white trim. Bright interior door makes it obvious the door is...

Quote: You can do it! This is esentially a first for the two of us who put it together so far. I plan on putting in up to maybe 10 chickens in there. I fence less free range so they won't have a run. As for skill... This is my first real foundation coop that is not a play house or tractor...

Preface: All coops thus far have been wood and wire tractors and one lowe's play house that was pre-cut. Skill level (1-10) was probably 2. This project in particular was all made possible by the contents of this box which I was lucky enough to be able to find about 6 years ago: It's an all...
