Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

Update: Angel is doing super well, it's like she never had any impaction and surgery at all! BUT!!! I will never again use cotton thread to close a wound, it got nasty... I started noticing a stink at the stitch site about a week after the surgery, there was no redness or oozing but there was...

my gosh! so happy to be able to share my experience with others, this is what this forum is all about eh? Angel is still in her broody breaker crate, still pooping the last bits of rocks and pebbles and not eating much - she's fussy! But she's drinking and seems fine, no more regurgitation of...

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

I only did what any mom would do to save her pet, when there were NO other alternatives..! I hope to never go through this again but if I have to, I'll feel more confident and will make sure to be better prepared. My mom said to get suture thread from the vet and try to find a scalpel, which...

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

Angel's crop is almost empty this morning! It's a miracle! She's been pooping rocks and grit for two days now and it looks like the surgery was a success! I guess we got enough gunk out to shrink her crop down to a size that allowed it to contract and do its job again, she's been drinking...

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

Update... Angel has been drinking a lot today and seems to be keeping most of it down, it's when she tried to eat more than two bites of soft bread that she regurgitates pale brown liquid. She won't eat the scrambled egg and apple sauce I gave her tonight, so tomorrow I will try something else...

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

Quote: thank you for the link, i read through it and the surgery is about identical to what we did (but we did NOT suture the crop to the skin, this is dangerous!). I did not get the entire crop contents as the incision site was getting stretched and torn, it had been 15 minutes of poking and...

Quote: I am just so confused and scared to make the wrong decision... She is fluffed up and in a corner of her broody breaker box, occasionally passing a solid poop. I don't know if her attitude is due to the broodiness or to pain/ discomfort. She is drinking and the two times I have given...

OK thank you for your reply! would you suggest re-opening the existing incisions to lessen the trauma? she's been living with the impaction for months now but it only got super, super bad recently.... if she eats, poops normally and lays eggs with the current impaction should I just leave it...

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

Quote: yeah, that's why I made the 1/2" cut high on top... but the real obstruction is at the bottom and with such a small incision, I cannot get the debris out from there. does anyone have any advice on what i should do? please? Angel is drinking now, thank goodness... and she made a...

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

Quote: I don't know yet as it's too soon after the surgery and she's not allowed to eat for another 10 hours... she's not interested in drinking any water, either... I don't want to force any liquids down so it's a wait and see situation. She's broody (and silkies are hard to break!!) so in a...

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

OK Angel seems to be doing well this morning, hard to say as she's broody so just standing in the corner of her wire-bottomed crate, a bit puffed up and still. The wound is clean, stitches holding, no redness and no signs of infection, her eyes are clear and I don't think she has a fever...

Quote: The clorhexidrine is a staple at the drugstore, you can find it in the first-aid section or ask the pharmacist. It's a pink liquid in a plastic bottle here, sold under different names depending on the brand. I used rubbing alcohol to sterilize everything, even the sewing thread which...

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

Quote: I sure hope she heals and isn't in too much pain... what a trooper. This is the girl whose 1st egg got stuck in her cloaca (she had a hymen of sorts) and I had to surgically remove the egg from her body and treat her for prolapsed vent - she healed superbly and never had a problem...

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

I don't know... I read somewhere that it was ok to use one or two cotton thread stitches inside on the crop if there was nothing else available (and I had nothing else...) so it's a wait-and-see situation. I assume the crop will mend itself and the thread will stay there forever? Anybody know?

Just performed impacted crop surgery - update post #54: caution!!

First, let me say that my little silkie hen's impacted crop was so severe, she was going to die from it. Not even liquid was passing through anymore, she kept vomiting clear goo the past two days. Her crop was bigger than a baseball, filled with thousands of pebbles - it weighed a ton and was...
