Only two hens left, bully behavior, what would you do?

I loved reading this! You should seriously consider writing a book on everything you've observed over the years. Chicken society is endlessly fascinating. How can something be so simple yet so complicated? We did end up starting over (or we will in May). I'm going to follow up in a couple...

Only two hens left, bully behavior, what would you do?

I love this concept, and it's kind of been my mantra when designing run space. Meeting the minimums for personal space does not leave much room for furnishings and accessories. I agree that a real coop would have given a safe area to just get out of sight for a bit. It might have made the...

Fingers crossed that the roosters straighten her out and Mushroom can integrate with some new friends in the meantime. Of course, Pepper's the scrawniest Australorp of all time. Couldn't even make a sandwich out of her. 😑

We're going for 200 sqft with all the bells and whistles, plus another 200 sqft chicken yard. If it's a nightmare to navigate the inside, then we're hopefully doing it right!

Only two hens left, bully behavior, what would you do?

Okay, I'm glad I'm not crazy seeing this. We did the 2 pair idea, and the segregation was immediately obvious. I kept telling myself, "Well maybe they have similar interests?" Nope! I'll either do 3 and 3, 6 of one type, or 6 singles. 👍

I couldn't believe how nasty they got once the eggs started, and this was from "gentle" Australorps. Certainly learned that chicks and pullets are just the honeymoon phase before 💩 gets real. Debating whether we should get a "mono-flock" of all one type next round, or if that matters. I did...

I would have loved to add more, but our set up stinks for integration. We're going to be mindful of the need to do this going forward.

Only two hens left, bully behavior, what would you do?

Agreed. They're settling into their new home this morning. 😔 This is anecdotal, but I believe there's such a thing as too few chickens. 3 worked for a couple months until it didn't, and the problems just snowballed down. We'll get a minimum of 6 next time and do a better job with their space.

This would be ideal. I love Pepper, but she's a stew pot chicken if I ever met one.

I appreciate the input. It feels like everything's leaning that way, sadly.

This will likely be my last thread for a while. I'm down to 2 hens: my 7 month-old Black Australorps who, up until recently, were very bonded and close. A couple hours after we rehomed our previous chicken, Pepper began to guard the feeder from Mushroom. We immediately put out a second feeder...
