    I'm using 1x6 for trim boards around the roof and then will do as you suggest - use the hardware cloth for the soffit. My overhangs will also be 12" and the 3.5" gap should help with keeping moisture down in the winter. My walls are 5' to 6' tall - so drafts up there shouldn't hit my hens.

    Thx for all the feedback. I'm running them vertical (tall wise) and using hardware cloth for now. As winter approaches, I may close them up. I have two windows as well. Got to get it finished. My girls are getting big.

    It's spanning 4' but will be about 5' counting the overhangs. I like the natural vent idea, but hate thinking of how to secure it. Will be a hassle putting hardwire between all the joists. I could always just put hardwire as a soffit I guess - a 25' roll would probably handle it.
