    Hemp bedding

Our chicks usually have a taste, but they learn to not eat it pretty quickly.

I like to throw in a handful of pine shavings every once in a while though, just to get that lovely freshly chopped wood smell.

If you want a deep litter type of thing, sure, you can mist it, but I haven't tried that, since I want to keep it as dry as possible. Humidity in Finland is mostly pretty low, except for Spring and Fall, when it rains a lot. But we don't get the hot and humid type of weather here, mainly...

    Hemp bedding

Changed the bedding in the coop on Saturday. It was completely dry, didn't smell, but there was quite a lot of poop and food stuff in there. This time we decided to try something different in there for a change, we've been happy with the hemp, but the better half managed to get a couple of bags...

Here pine shavings would probably be a lot more sustainable, as hemp requires fertilizer to grow. But hemp breaks down so much quicker that it beats pine shavings any day from a using your own compost point of view. Also, it's more absorbent.

Yeah, straw or especially hay goes moldy pretty quickly, but you shouldn't expose hemp to water either. Keeping it off the ground and stored under some sort of cover has been sufficient for me at least. Hope it was just a one time thing for you.

I store mine outside under a tarp without problems. The stuff comes packed in plastic though, so it stays pretty dry. Haven't had any issues myself.

Well, for us, the chickens mainly stay out in the run, so we haven't needed to clean the inside of the coop in ages. We're also using the hemp for the rabbits though, and it works great for them.

Your sentence structure and the username seemed Swedish, although I should have guessed Netherlands due to the hemp usage. NL is a bit of a pioneer in the use of hemp as bedding, at least it seems that way looking at where most of the imported stuff sold here is manufactured. Do you use...

    Hemp bedding

Time for a little update again. It's been over 4 months since we changed the bedding the last time. It still stays nice and dry, and the only time you really smell something unpleasant, is when the chicks that have now spent 7 weeks cooped up in the bedding let out some wetter poops. But they...

    Hemp bedding

Okay, some updates. As we've gone into winter, the chickens haven't wanted to leave the run anymore, and the arrival of chicks a bit over a week ago has added to the poop load inside the coop. So far, the bedding has been staying very dry, but a slight odor is noticeable. I wouldn't call it all...

    Hemp bedding

The coop is about 28 square feet, and the run is about 65 square feet. I've got one bale in the coop, still haven't changed it and I don't see a need for a long time. We just dumped another bale in the run under the roosts to take up the worst of the poop, it's been working nicely there. The...

    Hemp bedding

We've been having pretty rainy weather, and humidity has been over 90%. The chickens have been sleeping in the coop now, so we're starting to put the hemp to it's test. The bedding is staying bone dry, and no smell can be noticed in the coop. Thanks to the kitty litter scoop, we're not even...

    Hemp bedding

Still very satisfied with the hemp, it's stayed very clean. We bought a kitty litter scoop yesterday, and tried it out today. It worked great together with the hemp, most of the bedding just falls through leaving the poop with a bit of bedding stuck to it in the scoop.

    Hemp bedding

It's been a week now, so I thought I'd share some experiences. So far, only two or three of our flock have been sleeping in the coop out of our seven birds. The rest have been sleeping in the run. So we haven't really had that much poop production in the coop, but the poop that has landed there...

US legislation is a bit restrictive when it comes to hemp, in some states it's legal to grow it, but I think you might have trouble finding it over there.

I think we last cleaned the coop in June, and it really wasn't bad at all now either. The chickens do spend a lot of time outside though, and we do empty out poop on a daily basis.

    Hemp bedding

In this thread I intend to document my experiences with hemp bedding. The reasons I'm interested in this bedding is that it supposedly generates quite little dust, it's very absorbent, and it's easily compostable. When we hatched our first chicks in the spring, we bought some hemp bedding to...
