I agree. The larger redder comb at only 5 weeks, and the broader white bands in the barring on the top bird are indicators that it's a cockerel.

I have myself mixed up as I thought the wider & whiter the barring was a indicator of a hen?! But there is a definite difference in their barring

Also I think the photo is slightly misleading as in real life their comb colour really isn't that different....

Males get a double dose of the barring gene. Females only get one copy. This makes the males have wider bands of white and more narrow bands of black. Females have the wider bands of black, thus appearing darker.

Cockerels have more white in the barring which gives their barring overall a lighter appearance than that of hens. The redder comb of the top bird could just be a trick of imperfect lighting, but it definitely looks to have a larger comb than the bottom bird. At only 5 weeks, we could turn out to be wrong about its gender, but I'm leaning toward cockerel on it. I hope for your sake, we are wrong.)

Thanks guys....appreciate all your comments! Last time we had chooks we had RIR so it's a whole new adventure with this mixed flock! We knew it would be impossible out of 5 chicks to end up with all hens but we were secretly praying! Lol! Time will tell
