Are you lucky to be living on a farm?

So excited for you, we've been in the country just two years and I'd never want to go back. The fresh air and peace and quiet is so relaxing.i was always jealous of my country cousins now ones in Toronto and ones in Winnipeg!!big cities ,no room for cows and chickens there!!

Thanks. Even though we can raise chickens where we live, my son-in-law would like to raise some goats, and my granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) wants a pony, and there's just no way we can have those things where we are now. Plus we really want to get out from under our mortgage (property is horrendously expensive here in Hawaii).

I moved from a nice neighborhood in the suburbs to a few acres out in the country. I'm actually only about twenty minutes from my old neighborhood now, but because I'm well outside city limits it seems like a million miles. It is a dream come true for me, and I feel absolutely blessed. Yes, it is a lot of chores, but the chores are so rewarding that I prefer them over vacation! We have a pond, an outbuilding, an orchard, a dog park, and lots and lots of extra space. I'd still rather have ten acres or more, but I definitely wouldn't want to maintain more than a few acres (argh weeds!).

My son recently graduated from high school, so I don't think he appreciates the new home at his age quite yet. His friends are only twenty minutes away, but he definitely gets lonely and bored, mainly because he refuses to join in the chores. I think he'll come around. This is the way people were meant to live, not trapped in a dwelling dependent on city services for everything.

I love living on my family farm (4th generation). I could NOT live in town or the city. Too many people, way too crowded and all that concrete seems so unnatural. I love being able to go outside and smell the fresh air, harvest food from my garden and collect eggs from my own hens. Plus there is so much to do out here. Today's youth are becoming increasingly detached with all the cell phone, Facebook, video game fantasy worlds, they're not out doing--they're not digging their hands into the soil, smelling the fresh cut hay, working up a good sweat that leaves you exhausted but satisfied. I say move to the country or a farm, your kids will be lucky indeed.
