I understand that it takes about 21 days for eggs to hatch, but is that from the first egg that is laid or will she stop laying and then it is 21 days from the last egg? Tilly is an Australorp and has laid 12 eggs so far. Thank you!

Hi :welcome

It is 21 days from when she starts sitting on the eggs. Eggs need to reach a constant regular temperature for the development of the embryo to begin. Either a hen sitting on them or them being placed in an incubator. Day 1 is counted after a full 24 hours of incubation. So say she started sitting on a Monday, day 1 would be Tuesday. Is she broody now? If she is constantly sitting on the nest of eggs and only coming off to eat and drink once or twice per day she is broody. If she is acting normal and just going in to lay each day and coming out she is not broody. Here is an article broody hens you might like to have a read through ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/broody-hens

Hope this helps you a little and good luck.
