I am now being given two eggs a day from my two leghorns. I have 6 black sex link that are about 3 weeks younger than my leghorns and i have one rir rooster. My other 2 rir were taken by a predator. My rooster is absolutely beautiful but has just started chasing the girls around. Fertilizing the eggs im guessing. It almost appears like rape...i apologize for my ignorance but is this normal. Also can we eat eggs if they are fertilized? Or do i have to seperate the rooster? Also,if a year down the road we want to hatch some eggs do we need to get more rir hens or would our rir rooster and our hens be ok?

What you are seeing is normal. However, if you have a younger (juvenile rooster), he may be a bit "clumsy" with the ladies and not posses a lot of finesse at this point. Hopefully he will mature a bit more, and with that, not be quite so rough. Either way, that's just what chickens do.

Go ahead and eat the fertilized eggs. There is nothing wrong with them.

Your rooster will give you the option of hatching out eggs at a later date if you so choose. They will most likely not fit any breed type, but will be a nice "barnyard mix" or cross.

Thank you so much...the rooster is about 3 weeks younger than the leghorns but you couldnt tell him that...he is strutting around like a king lol. And down the road if we ever did decide to hatch some chicks it would strictly be for the enjoyment of having them and of course more eggs. Thanks again for the info
